Univision Continues to Outpace ESPN Networks on World Cup Viewership

Once again, Univision and Univision Deportes teamed up to deliver a bigger audience than ESPN’s Family of Networks for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

For Mexico-Cameroon on Friday, Univision saw an average audience of 5 million viewers for the game that aired midday on the East Coast and 9 a.m. out West. ESPN2 had an average audience of 2.1 million viewers giving the total average viewership of 7.1 million for the game.

Univision is adding its coverage is drawing a 25% higher audience through four games compared to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

In addition to outdrawing ESPN’s networks in total viewers, Univision is also doing well in key demographics in 18-34 and 18-49. A lot has to do with Univision is over-the-air in major markets such as Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Sacramento as compared to ESPN being all-cable.

But for Univision, it has to be very encouraging to see these numbers. We have the official announcement from Univision.
