QUOTES FROM WEEK 6 EDITIONS OF NFL NETWORK’S NFL GAMEDAY FIRST & NFL GAMEDAY MORNING

Quick Quotes from NFL GameDay First & NFL GameDay Morning

“Yes. The results speak for themselves. It is a real lesson here: if you want to take some risks and suffer the consequences, then you can do a lot in this league.” – Jerry Jones on if the Herschel Walker trade is the smartest personnel decision he’s ever made

“If he’s released this year, I don’t know if Geno Smith gets another job in the National Football League.” – Michael Robinson on New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith

“Other than Mark Sanchez they’ve drafted all defensive players in the first round and offensive players in the second round. So you have a second-round offense taking the field every day, every week in the National Football League.” – Warren Sapp on the New York Jets

“I like what they did last week but I’m going to say I don’t believe we’re going to see that same team…I think you’re going to see a little more of the issues that we saw earlier in the year with the Patriots.” – Kurt Warner on the New England Patriots facing the Buffalo Bills

“He uses the nay-sayers and the negativity all week long better than any player in the NFL.” – Shaun O’Hara on New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady

“If you can couple a defense like this with Andrew Luck and that explosive offense, this may be a team that can push for a championship.” – Kurt Warner on the Indianapolis Colts

“Here is the word from Cowboys coaches to their players: that Richard Sherman is overrated.” – Ian Rapoport

“This is a career-defining win. Not only for the Dallas franchise based on what they’ve done since they went to the Super Bowl last, but for Tony Romo as well.” – Sterling Sharpe on the importance of a Dallas Cowboys win over the Seattle Seahawks

Quotes from NFL GameDay First

NFL Network GameDay First
Every Sunday morning at 7:00 AM ET, NFL Network is first on the field with NFL GameDay First. Host Melissa Stark, co-host/analyst Sterling Sharpe, and analysts Shaun O’Hara and Michael Robinson provide the first analysis of the day’s games, while NFL Network reporters stationed across the league report from stadiums with the first on-location reports of the day.

“If he’s released this year, I don’t know if Geno Smith gets another job in the National Football League.” – Michael Robinson on why New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith needs to improve his play

“Geno Smith isn’t progressing like I think everybody thought he would…I watch him make two or three really bigtime throws and I think this guy has so much potential. But he just can’t develop that consistency.” – Kurt Warner on New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith

“Rex Ryan does have a lot of pressure. This is his team. This GM is not tied to Rex Ryan.” – Michael Robinson on how important it is for New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan to get the Jets back on track

“He’s been the most consistent Jet all season long. If it’s me, I don’t see why we can’t hand it to him 35, 45 times.” Sterling Sharpe on New York Jets running back Chris Ivory

“He uses the nay-sayers and the negativity all week long better than any player in the NFL.” – Shaun O’Hara on the improvement of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady

“This is a career-defining win. Not only for the Dallas franchise based on what they’ve done since they went to the Super Bowl last, but for Tony Romo as well.” – Sterling Sharpe on why the Dallas Cowboys need win against the Seattle Seahawks

“Dez Bryant has the edge over Richard Sherman because Dez Bryant’s speed is greater than Richard Sherman’s speed. If he gets him one-on-one, that’s a mismatch in the Cowboys’ favor. DeSean Jackson showed us a little bit of what that speed can do to Richard Sherman last week in the Monday night game.” Shaun O’Hara on the matchup between Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman

“This defense runs through the defensive line and Bobby Wagner. His ability to diagnose plays one or two steps before other defenders diagnose them, that’s what gives him the upper hand all the time…Bobby Wagner will be a Pro-Bowl player this year. He is the force behind the Seattle defense.” – Michael Robinson on the crucial role linebacker Bobby Wagner plays for the Seattle Seahawks defense

NFL GameDay Morning Feature on 25th Anniversary of Herschel Walker Trade

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the trade which sent Pro Bowl running back Herschel Walker from the Dallas Cowboys to the Minnesota Vikings, NFL GameDay Morning revisited the monumental trade with interviews with Walker, Cowboys owner/president/general manager Jerry Jones and former Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson.

Provided below are quotes from Walker, Jones and Johnson discussing the trade:

Jerry Jones: “Herschel Walker was already legendary in my mind. He was almost God-like relative to his demeanor.”

Jimmy Johnson: “I’ll trade anybody if we have a chance to get better.”

Herschel Walker: “Jerry Jones and I were doing a radio show. Jerry Jones said, ‘Herschel, you’re going to be with the Cowboys the rest of your life.’ And the next day I got the word that I was traded to Minnesota.”

Jerry Jones: “There was criticism at the time. Who wanted to make a trade like that and then not make it work? I bet it put some more fire in Jimmy Johnson. I know it put fire in me.”

Herschel Walker: “That’d be tough [for the Cowboys to win the Super Bowls they did without making the trade]. You can have a great one player, a great two players but you need a team. Jimmy and Jerry went out and established a team of horses.”

Quotes from NFL GameDay Morning

NFL Network NFL GameDay Morning
NFL GameDay Morning is the most comprehensive pregame show on Sunday morning, airing at 9:00 AM ET for four hours on NFL Network and taking viewers straight up to kickoff. Host Rich Eisen joins analysts Steve Mariucci, Marshall Faulk, Kurt Warner, Warren Sapp and Michael Irvin to bring fans the latest news, injury reports, pregame analysis and game previews. Additionally, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport provides the latest inside information from around the league.

“I like what they did last week but I’m going to say I don’t believe we’re going to see that same team. That front in Buffalo is going to get after Tom Brady with all of the issues they have up front and they’re going to affect him. They’re not going to allow him to just sit back there and throw to wide open guys. I think you’re going to see a little more of the issues that we saw earlier in the year with the Patriots.” – Kurt Warner on the New England Patriots facing the Buffalo Bills

“What the Legion of Boom does is they scare you into thinking that you can’t take shots down the field. They scare you into thinking I can’t move the ball, they’re going to get after me but I think that’s what you have to do. That’s how you have to attack them. You have to take your chances to hold the ball and push the ball down field and get big plays.” – Kurt Warner on facing the Seattle Seahawks defense

“[Antonio Brown] is playing some of the best wide receiver in the National Football League right now. He is doing some incredible things, making incredible plays keeping Pittsburgh in every game. He is a true four-down player.” – Michael Irvin on Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown

“To me, it’s not even about the numbers. This is about an eye test; it’s about watching this team play and I don’t believe they’re hitting on all cylinders anywhere close to where they were last year. Last year, it seemed when they got off the bus this team was scoring points; this team was completing everything, they could run the football – they could do whatever they wanted on the football field. I’m just not seeing it this year.” – Kurt Warner on the Denver Broncos this year compared to last season

“When you look at their draft picks, other than Mark Sanchez they’ve drafted all defensive players in the first round and offensive players in the second round. So you have a second-round offense taking the field every day, every week in the National Football League…From the top to the bottom, they’re picking the wrong players and they’re putting them in difficult positions.” – Warren Sapp on the New York Jets

“Cam Newton has unlimited potential. The sky is the limit, in my mind. He has rare talent.” – Steve Mariucci on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton

“I worry about [Andy Dalton] in those big moments. I worry about how he handles under the lights. If there is one thing about Cam Newton, he may not be as consistent but he handles the big stage very, very well.” – Kurt Warner on Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton compared to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton

“Jimmy [Johnson] had all of us on the block. They had a trade in the pocket: I was on my way to Atlanta at the time. [John Wooten] told coach Johnson just think about it, we’ll come back tomorrow and coach came back and said we’re good. I was that close to being gone at the time too.” – Michael Irvin on nearly being traded by the Dallas Cowboys

“If you can couple a defense like this with Andrew Luck and that explosive offense, this may be a team that can push for a championship. I didn’t think they were there because I thought they were more just offensive-oriented but I like what I’m seeing defensively.” – Kurt Warner on the Indianapolis Colts

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport

On the current situation with the New York Jets:
“No one is happy with the Jets, but according to several sources in and around the situation I’ve spoken with, there is going to be no midseason firing of Rex Ryan or general manager John Idzik. What I am told is owner Woody Johnson will assess the situation in its entirety after the season. I’m told there is no litmus test as far as saying Rex needs to make the playoffs and then he’ll be able to keep his job even though his contract actually triggers with a playoff appearance because there is an acknowledgment in the organization that there is just not as much talent as they thought there would be, certainly not as much talent as they had last year. One thing to look at, last year the Jets didn’t fire Rex Ryan. There was a fear in the organization that they would fire him, someone else would hire him and all of a sudden start winning. That fear still exists.”

On New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik:
“What I am told by sources in and around the situation, everything is on the table for both Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik. For Ryan, from what I’m told this week, seems a little safer than I realized and maybe John Idzik a little more in danger than I realized. Here’s why: two big issues. One, the $20 million not spent in salary cap space. I’m told owner Woody Johnson said you could spend; it’s not like the owner is holding back the purse strings. Idzik just simply said there wasn’t a wise investment. The Jets do think this money will be spent eventually. The other big issue, this is a team in transition. They want to build for the long term, they want to build through the draft but Rex Ryan, he wants to win now which is why it’s kind of weird.”

On if the Dallas Cowboys’ 4-1 start has bought head coach Jason Garrett more time:
“It has not. Actually, I talked to Jerry Jones about this earlier in the week. I wondered if the Cowboys win here and made a big statement against Seattle, could they begin talks on a Jason Garrett contract extension since he is in the final year of his four-year deal? Jerry Jones told me no, there will be no extension talks until after the season. That is their policy and they are not deviating, so they’re really going to make Jason Garrett earn it.”

On the Dallas Cowboys facing the Seattle Seahawks:
“Here is the word from Cowboys coaches to their players: that Richard Sherman is overrated. That the rest of the secondary props him up and makes him play better than he actually is. That Sherman is protected by some of the best safeties in the game, including Earl Thomas. Cowboys coaches do think the Seahawks defense is the best in the NFL but as far as Sherman, they feel like they can attack.”

On if New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham will be able to play when they return from the bye:
“No. I’m told he will not. The initial word on Jimmy Graham’s shoulder sprain was that it was minor. Instead, I’m told Jimmy Graham will likely miss two or three weeks coming out of the bye. That means he’ll likely miss the Lions game, he’ll likely miss the Packers game. The Saints signed a tight end Tom Crabtree; obviously not a replacement for Jimmy Graham but he’s going to have to be.”
