NFL Network GameDay FirstQuotes from NFL GameDay First

Every Sunday morning at 7:00 AM ET, NFL Network is first on the field with NFL GameDay First. Host Melissa Stark, co-host/analyst Sterling Sharpe, and analyst Shaun O’Hara provide the first analysis of the day’s games, while NFL Network reporters stationed across the league report from stadiums with the first on-location reports of the day. This week, two-time Pro Bowl running back Clinton Portis joined as a guest analyst.

“The only thing he hasn’t accomplished, the only thing you can say he did not do was go 19-0…He has done everything asked of him.” – Sterling Sharpe on New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady

“With the weather and those young receivers, the last time they played in the rain was against the Jets on Thursday night and they laid the football down like it was going out of style.” – Sterling Sharpe on the New England Patriots playing the Cincinnati Bengals where it is expected to rain during the game

“Peyton Manning. To go and play at your best for three different head coaches, that speaks for itself.” – Clinton Portis on who is currently the best quarterback in the NFL

“When I look at Drew Brees and all those weapons he has, if they can go into Chicago and throw it around like they have all season long, they will be very close – if not break – 6,000 yards.” – Sterling Sharpe on which quarterback will reach 6,000 passing yards

“Sean Peyton is Drew Brees’ safety net. These guys go hand and hand together.” – Clinton Portis on New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton and quarterback Drew Brees

“They’ve been turning the football over at an alarming rate; 16 turnovers in four games – we had 14 in the entire 2008 season. That to me is alarming under a Tom Coughlin-coached football team. To me, that’s the worst football I have ever seen them play.” – Shaun O’Hara on the 0-4 New York Giants

“It is scary: there is no such thing as defense except in Seattle.” – Sterling Sharpe on the current NFL

“I love the way Philip Rivers is playing. He is the most underrated guy in our league.” – Sterling Sharpe on San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers

NFL Network NFL GameDay MorningQuotes from NFL GameDay Morning

NFL GameDay Morning is the most comprehensive pregame show on Sunday morning, airing at 9:00 AM ET for four hours on NFL Network and taking viewers straight up to kickoff. Host Rich Eisen joins analysts Steve Mariucci, Marshall Faulk, Kurt Warner, Warren Sapp and Michael Irvin to bring fans the latest news, injury reports, pregame analysis and game previews. Additionally, NFL Media’s national insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Media’s Mike Silver provide the latest inside information from around the league. This week, NFL Network analyst Willie McGinest appeared in-studio.

“I just believe the problem is the Bears expect for Jay Cutler to kind of change who he is. You just have to accept some of the things that come along with Jay Cutler because of the strength of his arm and his belief in that arm that he can make plays.” – Marshall Faulk on Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler

“Jay Cutler is going to get into one of those games where you look on the other side and you see Drew Brees and you want to get into a shootout. That’s just what happens whenever you talk about NFL quarterbacks going up against other elite quarterbacks.” – Warren Sapp on Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler facing quarterback Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints

“It’s amazing the continuity issues that these guys have had…There is just not [the] precision between these two guys that this team needs. If this team is going to have any success, these two guys have to get on the same page.” – Kurt Warner on Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton and wide receiver A.J. Green

“This team tried to prove something last year; they tried to prove that we can win without him, we can win in spite of this Bountygate and all of the issues, and they put so much pressure on themselves that they struggled. Now that Sean Payton is back…it’s eased the tension, it’s eased the pressure for this team and now they’re playing great football.” – Kurt Warner on the impact of head coach Sean Payton on the New Orleans Saints

“The game never gets too big for him and when I watch him play he’s always calm back there…He’s having fun playing the game and that’s all you ever want from a quarterback.” – Marshall Faulk on Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson

“I worry more about the pieces around him. I still don’t feel like they have the guys that can bail him out. He has to make more plays – tougher plays – than he’s had to make in the past and that’s why he’s struggling.” – Kurt Warner on Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco

“I point this straight at Joe Flacco…He has to pick it up and throw the ball down the field to stretch the field.” – Marshall Faulk on the Baltimore Ravens’ struggles running the football

“They are expecting big things from Matt Schaub…So it has to be a difficult situation in that locker room to try to balance how we do deal with this guy so we get everything out of him but we don’t push him in the wrong direction.” – Kurt Warner on Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub

“As soon as you say, ‘We should win,’ that’s when the trap game kicks in. You have to go out and play this game in between the lines and win football games the way you have been.” – Marshall Faulk on the 4-0 Kansas City Chiefs facing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Tennessee Titans

“I love seeing young guys grab that confidence and say. ‘Yes, I do belong in the NFL.’ That’s the confidence that Tom Brady has given that young man.” – Michael Irvin on New England Patriots wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins, who had 127 receiving yards and a touchdown in Week 4

“He’s that one guy that gives everybody confidence because all they say is, ‘All we have to do is keep working, we know we have a chance if he’s in the game to win.’ Now he’s not in the game. That dampers your confidence.” – Michael Irvin on the impact of Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson not playing against the Green Bay Packers

NFL Media’s National Insider Ian Rapoport & NFL Media’s Mike Silver

On quarterback Josh Freeman:
Ian Rapoport:
“I’m told by sources close to the situation the Oakland Raiders at this point represent Josh Freeman’s best possible landing spot. Several reasons but one of them is his increased familiarity with offensive coordinator Greg Olson; they worked together in Tampa. Sources tell me Freeman’s agents have talked to about 10 teams, including the Buffalo Bills. Some places he is unlikely to land: the Browns, the Cardinals and also the Packers. Now, why would the Raiders keep accumulating quarterbacks? General manager Reggie McKenzie comes from the Ron Wolf school of building a team: you can never have too many.”

Mike Silver: “Let me give you another team that has courted Josh Freeman: the San Francisco 49ers. He’s not interested; he still sees himself as a starter. It brings us back to Oakland, there is a little bit of trepidation on both sides. His reputation took a beating – that is real. A face to face meeting where the two sides can look each other in the eye – possibly very early next week – would lay the foundation for him to possibly go to Oakland. One more thing: if Josh Freeman does go to the Raiders, they would see him as a starter as opposed to Terrelle Pryor.”

On the Carolina Panthers:
Rapoport:
“I’m told by sources close to that situation the Panthers are laying the foundation for a possible coaching search after the season, doing background checks on candidates. So much so that one candidate actually knows that the team is interested in him. Clearly, the Panthers need to keep winning.”

Silver: “Ron Rivera is popular in that locker room. A lot of players have told me that; one said the guy who can save Rivera’s job is Cam Newton. If he plays like he did last game, we have a shot.”

On the Cincinnati Bengals:
Silver:
“I talked to Marvin Lewis this week for a long time. He did not express a lot of dissatisfaction with Andy Dalton; he said we’re putting more on him and he’s getting better…He wasn’t throwing his quarterback under the bus, but in general the Bengals are 2-2. He said we deserve to be 2-2, we are what we are. His message: if you’re not prepared in any given week, you’re going to lose in this league. He feels that maybe before the Browns game they were taking themselves for granted a little bit.”
