Fang’s Bites Podcast No. 6 — Super Bowl XLVIII Aftermath Edition

This wraps up the coverage of Super Bowl XLVIII with a podcast that reviews the game itself, looks at the ratings, how the ads did for their marketers and a review of the ads themselves.

The guests are one veteran of the old Sports Media Weekly podcast and two newcomers.

Our first guest is John Ourand of Sports Business Journal/Sports Business Daily. He had an opportunity to attend the game and we spoke about the following:

  • How Super Bowl XLVIII was to attend in person.
  • How the Big Game attracted a record viewership of 111.5 million.
  • Why the game did so well despite a huge blowout.
  • A look at the Thursday Night Football bidding.
  • A look at NBC’s upcoming coverage of the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

The next guest is Anthony Crupi of AdWeek, one of the truly warped minds on Twitter. Among the topics:

  • Again, the Super Bowl viewership.
  • Why marketers choose to put Super Bowl ads online before the game.
  • How the NFL became a ratings juggernaut.
  • Why NBC has kept a few ad spots open during the Winter Olympics.

And I wrap up with Jackie Pepper, a contributor to KNBC in Los Angeles and to HLN as well as her own site, Pepper on Sports. We discuss the Super Bowl ads and how she thought they fared this year.

It’s a longer podcast, but stick with it. Lots of fascinating stuff.
