Super Bowl XLIX is the Most-Watched TV Show in U.S. History

Well, it’s official now. Super Bowl XLIX on NBC is the most-watched television program in U.S. history with 114.4 million viewers breaking the previous record of 112.3 set last year by Super Bowl XLVIII on Fox. The viewership peaked at over 120 million in the last ten minutes of the game.

Thanks to a close game plus the snowstorm in the Midwest that was heading East and the Ballghazi story, NBC got a perfect mix to garner the highest audience ever. The rating averaged an amazing 47.5 with a 71 share which is up 2% from last year’s 46.7/69, but still trails the all-time leader, Super Bowl XVI which received a 49.1/73.

If you’re wondering about halftime, Katy Perry’s show featuring dancing sharks averaged another record of 118.5 million viewers, up over 3 million from last year’s show with Bruno Mars.

So five out of the last six Super Bowls have set viewership records which is quite amazing.

Boston which had a 61.0/85 was the highest-rated local market followed by New Orleans, Phoenix, Detroit and Norfolk tying for fourth, Chicago, Kansas City, Denver and Indy tying for eighth and Buffalo rounding out the top 10.

Here’s the official announcement.
