Sunday Night Football Wins Primetime, But Down From Last Year

Received the overnight ratings from last night’s Sunday Night Football game between the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants. I give NBC credit for not trying to spin the numbers. It admits when a game is lower than the comparable game from the previous year. And that’s what happened last night. The overnight rating for last night was a 14.0 with a 22 share. That was good enough to win primetime over all network and cable competition.

Last year’s Week 11 game also pitting the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles received a 15.9/23. NBC notes that both teams came into last year’s game with the same 6-3 records. Not the case in this year’s game. But I also attribute the lower ratings for ABC’s American Music Awards which was opposite SNF on NBC. And the NFL overrun on CBS also had something to do with the lower ratings.

No matter, NBC did win the night and that was the most important thing for the network. Locally, Philadelphia received the highest rating of all local markets with a 29.7/43. New York was finished 4th with a very good 19.2/29.

NEW YORK – November 21, 2011 – Sunday Night Football was the No. 1 broadcast in primetime last night and led NBC to another Sunday night win, according to overnight data released today by The Nielsen Company.

Last night’s game on NBC, in which the Eagles defeated the Giants 17-10, registered a 14.0 overnight rating and a 22 share, the eighth time this season that the overnight rating was 14.0 or higher. NBC NO. 1 ON SUNDAY NIGHT: Last night’s Sunday Night Football again led NBC to win the night among metered markets in primetime (7-11 p.m.) with a 10.8/17, topping the 8.7/13 for second-place CBS, which was boosted by an NFL overrun.
