Overnights For Day 3 of Olympics Down For NBC From Beijing

Despite having two gold medal winners in the pool including Missy Franklin and men’s gymnastics, NBC saw a slight drop in the overnight ratings for Day 3 of the London Olympics. Last night’s ratings hit 20.1 with a 32 share, well above any network competition.

That’s 5% below Beijing’s 21.2/33 with live events compared to last night which had tape delays. The ratings for London surpass the last European games for Day 3, Athens by 3%.

Locally, Salt Lake City and Denver (home market of Missy Franklin) were the top two rated markets for the Olympics. The highest rated East Coast market was Richmond, VA in 9th. Neither of the major markets of Boston, Los Angeles, New York nor Chicago were rated in the top 20.

Here’s the info from NBC Sports.

  • Last night, the third night of competition, NBC drew a 20.1 overnight rating and 32 share (8-11:15 p.m. ET/PT), 3% higher than Athens (19.6/30), the Last European Olympics.
  • The 20.1/32 overnight is just 5% off the comparable night in Beijing (21.2/33) when NBC presented the following events live in primetime: Michael Phelps third gold medal (200m freestyle) in three nights; Aaron Peirsol gold in the 100m backstroke with Matt Grevers taking silver; Natalie Coughlin gold in the 100m backstroke; Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh competing in beach volleyball; and the U.S. men’s gymnastics team taking a surprising bronze medal in the team competition.
  • Last night featured Missy Franklin winning gold in the 100m backstroke, the Men’s team gymnastics competition, women’s beach volleyball with Misty May-Treanor and Kerry Walsh, and Ryan Lochte placing 4th in the men’s 200 freestyle.
  • Due to time zone differences, last night’s coverage was shown on delay in primetime but live on NBCOlympics.com. The competition from Beijing was live to the Eastern and Central time zones in the U.S.
