The overnight ratings are in for the NFL Season Opener which moved to Wednesday this year to avoid conflicting with the nominating speech for President Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC. And last night with heavy viewership focusing on former President Bill Clinton’s speech in the 10 p.m. ET hour, the rating for the Dallas Cowboys-New York Giants on NBC finished at 16.5, down 4% from last year’s game between New Orleans and Green Bay which was held on a Thursday and garnered at 17.2/28.
NBC says last night’s overnight numbers were the 5th best primetime game on NBC.

And Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor of Sports Business Daily/Sports Business Journal says the move to Wednesday was definitely beneficial as compared to four years ago when the season opening game was played on Thursday on the same night as the Republican National Convention and John McCain’s nominating speech.
