NBC Honored By International Olympic Committee

NBC Sports was awarded three Olympic rings including two gold for its coverage from the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. Hard to believe that they took place over half a year ago. We have this press release from NBC Sports.

NBC OLYMPICS WINS THREE OLYMPIC GOLDEN RINGS INCLUDING TWO GOLD FOR BEST OLYMPIC FEATURE & BEST ATHLETE PROFILE

NBC’s Olympic Program Earns Silver

NEW YORK – September 20, 2010 – NBC Olympics won three Olympic Golden Rings, two gold and one silver, last Thursday in Lausanne, Switzerland at the International Olympic Committee’s biennial ceremony. NBC Olympics President Gary Zenkel was in attendance in Lausanne to accept the awards on behalf of NBC Universal Sports & Olympics Chairman Dick Ebersol and the entire NBC Olympics division.

NBC won gold in the following two categories:

  • Best Olympic Feature: “Discovery” was NBC Olympics’ opening feature of the Vancouver Games. It examined British Columbia as the last frontier in the age of European exploration while simultaneously presenting athletes looking to discover their limits and potential.
  • Best Athlete Profile: Norwegian skier Aksel Lund Svindal fought back from major injuries suffered during a horrific crash at Beaver Creek, Colorado in 2007. With the support of his father and confidante, Bjorn, and his own deep resolve, Svindal returned the following year to Beaver Creek — the same course that almost ended his career — and won the downhill. He went on to win multiple medals in Vancouver.
NBC Olympics also won silver for Best Olympic Program. The Olympic Golden Rings are awarded by the IOC biennially to honor broadcasters for their outstanding coverage of the Olympic Games. Thursday’s awards were specifically for Vancouver.

This year, clips from countries around the world were judged by an international jury, with the winners receiving their prizes at The Olympic Museum in the presence of IOC President Jacques Rogge. Members of the IOC Radio and Television Commission were also in attendance, along with representatives from the rights-holding broadcasters, the Organizing Committees for the Olympic Games in Vancouver, London and Sochi, International Federations and the city of Lausanne.

NBC Sports won two Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards in August for its coverage of the Opening Ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. The two awards were:
  • Outstanding Lighting Direction (Electronic, Multi-Camera) For Variety, Music Or Comedy Programming
  • Outstanding Music Direction
NBC Sports’ coverage of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games was watched by 190 million Americans on the networks of NBC Universal, making it the second-most watched Winter Olympics ever, surpassing Salt Lake City (187 million) and ranking behind only the Lillehammer Games.

Congratulations to NBC for its honors from the Winter Olympics.
