Inside Mad Men: Season 7, Episode 1 — “Time Zones”

Ok, Mad Men is back. It’s 1969. It’s eight weeks in Mad Men time since the Season Six finale. SC&P is bi-coastal with offices in NYC and LA. Ted Chaough is back in NYC to pay a visit. Peggy is dealing with a new boss who doesn’t seem to like her as much as Don did. Roger Sterling is shacking up with a hippie and is seen naked as a jaybird. Roger meets with his daughter Margaret. Roger Sterling is the greatest character in the history of television.

Don is still out of work from SC&P and hasn’t told Megan? Speaking of Megan, she’s found work on an NBC pilot that will eventually become the series “Bracken’s World.” Pete Campbell has adapted to the California lifestyle.

Joan attempts to save Ken Cosgrove’s bacon who’s wearing an eye patch. Peggy is a super at her building and fights with a tenant. We later find that Don is moonlighting helping Freddy Rumsen who is actually pitching Don’s lines to ad agencies. Oh, and everyone is miserable. Don is miserable. Peggy is miserable. Roger is miserable. The only one who isn’t miserable is Pete.

Let’s go to the recap with Matthew Weiner, Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks and Elisabeth Moss.

Here’s a key scene from tonight’s episode showing Freddy Rumsen giving Don some advice. Interesting stuff.

And let’s look at the fashion from the episode with the great costume designer Janie Bryant. Dan Bishop the Production Designer tells us about Megan’s LA house. Claudette Didul who’s the Set Decorator goes into the furniture. Theraesa Rivers, the Hair Department Head discusses Vincent Kartheiser’s hairline. Makeup Department Head Lana Horoschowski talks about tanning Pete Campbell. Ellen Freund, Property Master talks about the real estate flyers. I like this expanded inside shop stuff. Pretty cool.

No sneak peek at next week’s episode, but you know Matthew Weiner never gives anything away in the promos and they’re all cryptic anyway. Mad Men airs on AMC at 10 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
