INSIDE THE NFL Discusses Michael Vick, Cowboys, Vikings; and Talks to Kansas City’s head coach Todd Haley

NEW YORK (September 22, 2010) – This week’s INSIDE THE NFL on SHOWTIME – Wednesday, Sept, 22 at 9 p.m. ET/PT features an interview with Kansas City’s head coach Todd Haley, a discussion on Philadelphia’s Michael Vick returning to the starting line-up, the 0-2 Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings, plus NFL “Insider” Mike Lombardi with updates on the Braylon Edwards situation.

Host James Brown anchors INSIDE THE NFL on SHOWTIME with All-Pro NFL greats Cris Collinsworth, Phil Simms and Warren Sapp serving as expert analysts.

Following are excerpts from the show:

(On Michael Vick Being Named a Starter in Philadelphia)

SIMMS: I guess Andy Reid realized he had to stand in front of the team. And the team watches the film and I think you guys will agree players really always know….the last six quarters that Michael Vick has played there is really nothing, even if you are a Michael Vick hater, what are you going to complain about? His running is still extraordinary. And what people always forget about Michael Vick, he has an extraordinary arm.

From a football perspective how can you be a Michael Vick hater?

SIMMS: Because people can’t separate a lot of things. If Michael Vick couldn’t run he could still be a franchise quarterback and a really good one in the NFL just because of his arm.

COLLINSWORTH: If Mike Vick didn’t start this week there would have been a revolution in the locker room, amongst the coaches and amongst the fans. It doesn’t mean that they won’t ultimately end up back at Kevin Kolb, they could. Michael Vick, let’s face it, he’s a little older, he doesn’t always stand in the pocket, follow the game plan. I am sure it’s difficult to coach. He is not going to do everything the coaches want him to do, but he creates in a way that we’ve never seen in this league.

SAPP: We remember the old Michael Vick, the last one in the building the first one out. It’s a different guy now. He is coming in and working on his craft as a quarterback. And you can see it in his film work. You watch him drop back and read things out and delivering the ball. He always has a wonderful arm and even better legs. But now he has his mental game coming along. When you are actually preparing and you know where your outlets are, how to get out of a play, the checks and the different stuff that you have to make. He’s a different quarterback now.

LOMBARDI REPORT

(On Braylon Edwards future)

COLLINSWORTH: He has to understand what he is doing to himself right now. Right now the other teams around the league, everyone has players that are issues. But the superstar players can get away with it. You have to keep your superstar players even if there are issues, even if there are problems, they still keep them. Braylon (Edwards) is not at that level to where people are going to line-up to go get Braylon Edwards with all these issues. So, he’s really working very hard at trying to work his way out of this league.

LOMBARDI: I know the Jets will not re-sign Braylon Edwards next year. He will be a free agent. And what you (Cris) just said is very true. He can’t live off those 16 touchdown passes he had in 2007. He has to play now. People realize perhaps a problem in the locker room, perhaps a suspension looming if he gets caught again. So Braylon Edwards, this decision he made with this DUI has hurt himself in future earning dollars and will impact him next year if in fact we have free agency.

(Is it time for Cowboys and Vikings to Panic)

SIMMS: Is time to panic? Yes…it’s the way they are losing. When you look at the Dallas Cowboys real quick you watch Tony Romo playing very fast. Now why is he playing a little hyper and very fast? Because he knows he thinks he’s going to get hit.  So it’s speeding up his process. Arguably taking their best player and throwing him a little bit off of his game. Of course that is just one reason it affects his whole football team

COLLINSWORTH: For the Dallas Cowboys they have a couple of issues, obviously the offensive line is shaken-up. The running game isn’t anywhere close to where it should be. And let’s face it, this defense was supposed to carry the load until the offensive line got healthy. You don’t give up that number of points to the Chicago Bears at home and not have issues. So now they have issues on the offensive side and defensively they better wake up because they are going to have to carry this team for a good period of time.
