FOX NFL SUNDAY NOTES – 11/2/14
Long Says Cowboys Were Shortsighted To Put Romo Back in Monday Night Game
Bradshaw: “I would absolutely not play RGIII today.”
Glazer Delivers Update on Tony Romo’s Back Injury
Wannstedt: Baltimore is the Most Complete Team in the AFC NorthFOX NFL KICKOFF on FOX Sports 1
Former NFL head coach and defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt believes the Baltimore Ravens will come out of the AFC North: “Cincinnati is going to break our hearts as they always do down the stretch. Cleveland right now is running on adrenaline. Ben Roethlisberger is having a Pro Bowl year but the Steelers defense is one of the oldest in the league and as the season wears on the defense will too. Baltimore is the most complete team in that division and will end up on top.”
FOX Sports 1 NFL analyst Wannstedt had two takeaways from quarterback Brandon Weeden’s performance a couple years ago when Wannstedt’s Buffalo Bills defense faced Weeden when the quarterback played for the Cleveland Browns. Weeden starts at quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys today in place of an injured Tony Romo. “This guy has a lot better arm than what he gets credit for. Secondly, he was not as mobile in the pocket than what we had thought.”
FOX Sports 1 reporter Colleen Dominguez sat down with Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson. Dominguez asked Wilson what he inferred following a rumor that some members of the team didn’t feel Wilson is ‘black enough.’ “I don’t really know what that means. For me, I’m an educated young individual that tries to lead his football team to victory every Sunday and that’s all I try to do. I’m not perfect by any means but I try to do things the right way. I try to help others and I try to make a difference in our community and also in our football team.”
Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush joined FOX NFL KICKOFF live in-studio. Bush on how this year’s team is different from last year’s team: “Our level of discipline is different. Last year we beat ourselves in a lot of games. We’re not making a lot of the same mistakes that we had made in the past and that’s a testament to our head coach Jim Caldwell.”
From FOX NFL SUNDAY on FOX
FOX NFL Sunday analyst Howie Long on the Cowboys putting Tony Romo back in last Monday night’s game against the Redskins: “Nobody is going to question Tony Romo’s toughness. I just think it was shortsighted given the surgery in the off-season, the protection issues they were having in the game, giving Romo off on Wednesdays to manage that back and [Brandon] Weeden was performing well. Plus, they got away from the run. Demarco Murray only touched the ball two times in the last 17 plays of the game and overtime. The bottom line is it was shortsighted for the Cowboys to put him back in the game and inject him.”
Two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Jimmy Johnson on whether RGIII should have started today: “Jay Gruden should put RGIII back in the lineup. He has to find out if he can play in this offense and if he can he count on him. That said, his style of play and his aggressiveness will lead to another injury. You can count on it. And I wonder if this is Jay Gruden’s decision or was he told to put RGIII back in the lineup today.
Added Terry Bradshaw: “I would absolutely not play him. There is no way he is 100% and now you are going to take a franchise quarterback and stick him out there just to see if he can run this offense. No way. Colt McCoy won the last two games and they should keep resting RGIII until after their bye week.”Hall of Fame defensive end Michael Strahan backs up Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. “One of the hardest things is to repeat [Super Bowl wins] because everyone feels they are the reason that they won. So the hardest thing is to keep everybody focused and feeling that they get enough credit. In this case, quarterbacks get most of the blame and most of the credit. It’s always been that way. From what I hear with the few guys that were saying that [Wilson isn’t ‘black enough’] it makes no sense. If the team is winning, you all win. Anybody in this league understands that if you’ve got a quarterback like Russell Wilson, you are appreciative.”
Hall of Fame defensive end Howie Long explains what the missing piece is for the San Francisco 49ers this season: “To me, the missing piece for this football team is Aldon Smith. Aldon Smith has a ripple effect on that entire football team. Aldon Smith versus Denver or Aldon Smith next week versus New Orleans changes the landscape for the San Francisco 49ers.”
FOX NFL Insider Jay Glazer delivers an update on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s injury: “It’s called a transverse process fracture. It’s basically a break of these two little bones that stick out the sides of the spinal column. It has nothing to do with his previous disc injury. However, because all the muscles are attached to it, it’s not a pain thing, but he’s not able to torque and turn on his throws and move around a lot. Romo said it has completely changed his day-to-day life. He has to think now to get out of bed differently, to walk differently, to stand up differently. Actually, this offseason he did a ton of research on stem cell regeneration not for his playing days, but just to live a normal life after he’s done with his career.”
FOX NFL Insider Jay Glazer on Wes Welker addressing the Denver Broncos about New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick’s motivational tactics and what Welker thinks Belichick is saying to his team: “One of the guys in the middle of this rivalry here is Wes Welker, the Broncos receiver who used to obviously play with Tom Brady. Last night he got up in the Broncos team meeting and said that he’s been in Belichick’s night-before meetings for the last six years and this is what he [Belichick] is saying about our team tonight: The Denver Broncos are frontrunners. The Denver Broncos can’t finish anybody. The Denver Broncos only beat us last year in the AFC Championship game because of injuries. He has no respect for anybody inside our locker room. Also, another note here, the Denver Broncos moved their team hotel this year because last year their fire alarm mysteriously went off at 2 o’clock in the morning. No incidents last night.”
That is all.
