SURPRISING NINERS/LIONS MATCHUP KICKS OFF NFL ON FOX DOUBLEHEADER – Week 6 of the 2011 NFL on FOX kicks off on Sunday, Oct. 16 as FOX Sports presents doubleheader coverage of six games—each presented in true HD. Surprisingly, the 49ers and the Lions find themselves in a marquee matchup in Week 6. Led by young, energetic coaches, Jim Harbaugh’s men come in at 4-1 and Jim Schwartz leads the 5-0 Lions into a battle in Detroit. Kenny Albert, Daryl Johnston and Tony Siragusa call the action from Ford Field. The Philadelphia Eagles haven’t been the dream team everyone thought they would be and look to turn things around with a matchup against the Redskins. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ train keeps on rolling as they host the Rams. In what figures to be another exciting NFC South matchup, Cam Newton and the Panthers travel to Atlanta to face Matt Ryan and the Falcons. The second half of FOX’s doubleheader features two of the NFL’s most-popular teams. Tony Romo and the always entertaining Cowboys travel to New England to take on Tom Brady and the Patriots. Thom Brennaman, Troy Aikman & Pam Oliver call all the action from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. Also, NFC South rivals meet when Josh Freeman and the Bucs host Drew Brees and the Saints.

Coverage begins at 12:00 PM ET with America’s most-watched Sunday afternoon pregame show, FOX NFL SUNDAY. Terry Bradshaw and Curt Menefee co-host the Emmy Award-winning program and are joined by analysts Howie Long, Michael Strahan and Jimmy Johnson.  NFL Insider Jay Glazer presents the latest league news and scoops from the FOX NFL SUNDAY studio while comedic prognosticator Frank Caliendo contributes his weekly “Frank’s Picks” segment.  FOX Sports rules analyst Mike Pereira is also on hand to go over any impactful officiating issues. This week’s edition of “The Journey,” which opens the show, is narrated by NFL legend Joe Montana. Pam Oliver sits down the Packers to find out how the defending champs are staying on track and hungry to repeat.

LONG: BRONOCS MUST TAILOR TO TEBOW – FOX NFL SUNDAY analyst Howie Long explored whether Tim Tebow gives the Broncos the best chance to win on Fox Sports Radio’s Dan Patrick Show earlier today: “I think they have bigger problems than just the quarterback position but he gives them such an emotional spark right now,” said Long. “John Fox is in a bad spot. The fans were clamoring and Tebow gave them a mixed bag last week. They are going to have to tailor that offense to him. He’s obviously uncomfortable taking the snap, he’s slow getting out and it’s a game where a fraction of a second makes a difference. There are some really great things he can do like extend plays and that wares down the defensive front.”

LYNCH: ROMO IS A LITTLE LIKE BRETT FAVRE – Coming off a bye, Tony Romo and the Cowboys were able to have a quiet week. That is sure to change with this week’s matchup with Tom Brady and the Patriots. NFL on FOX analyst John Lynch thinks that being the QB of “America’s Team” and his gun slinging ways have led to the headaches Romo and team have experienced. “Being the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, in many ways, is like being the President of the United States,” Lynch writes. “You’ve seen the before and after pictures of when a President takes office. They are constantly under the microscope.” Lynch feels that Romo doesn’t make things any easier on himself: “Romo thinks he can make every throw, he’s a little like Brett Favre in that regard. He’s a gunslinger and that sometimes gets him in trouble. A friend of mine who used to play with Romo said this about him: ‘With Tony, it’s like playing a par 5 in golf. Instead of going for the safe par, he’s going to go for the eagle every time.’”
