FOX NFL SUNDAY NOTES – 9/30/12

Johnson: Goodell Stuck a Fork in the Saints Before the Season Even Started
Pereira’s Advice to Returning Officials: Focus on the Basics

Analyst Jimmy Johnson looks at the mess in New Orleans: “The Saints would have been better off hiring someone like Bill Parcells for the first six games. At least they would have a true head coach. In reality, the coaching situation won’t change. Everyone is weathering the storm until Sean Payton returns next season but for now, this year’s version of the Saints is sunk. I was close to sticking a fork in the Saints but that would be piling on. Of course, Roger Goodell stuck a fork in them before the season ever started.”

Co-host Terry Bradshaw draws a comparison on what the officials return is like for players and fans: “Say the wife says I’m going to take four days off, you take care of the 8-month old twins and the 4-year old. You’re feeding and changing and taking them everywhere. All of a sudden you are worn out, then she walks in that door and you’re thrilled. You get her a new house, buy her a new ring, and promise her a vacation because you are so glad to see her. That’s how we feel about seeing these officials. We’re glad to have them back.”

Analyst Howie Long on how the officials returning may help with the struggling Packers’ offense: “They are out of rhythm right now. How are they going to get back? One of the things they talked about this week is going more no huddle now that the old officials are back. The continuity of the game was lost with the replacement officials. Look for that today.”

Analyst Jimmy Johnson added: “Their defense can carry this offense until they get back their rhythm.”

NFL rules analyst Mike Pereira’s advice to officials returning to the field today:

FOX NFL SUNDAY Insider Jay Glazer reports on the reason behind Kellen Winslow’s release from the Patriots: “He called me yesterday and just wanted to clear something up – there’s nothing going on with Belichick, nothing with Brady. He said ‘I was trying to help them out. They had some guys banged up at the tight end position but you don’t get to play tight end in New England because of Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski. I just wanted to play somewhere.’

Co-host Terry Bradshaw sarcastically sums up the Bears as they prepare to meet the Cowboys Monday night:

Analyst Michael Strahan on what the Eagles game plan should be as they prepare to face the Giants tonight: “Michael Vick has taken a lot of hits and he is indecisive. Jason Pierre-Paul today is going against the third offensive tackle for the Eagles. Philadelphia needs to establish a running game to throw the Giants off rhythm. New York should be feeling confident after the backups Ramses Barden and Andre Brown filled in well. They just can’t get over confident.”

More quotage is on the way.
