NFL Crossflexes in Week 14; Moves Indy-Cleveland to Fox

Ok, the NFL has announced a crossflex for Week 14 and it involves two AFC teams in the 1 p.m. ET window. Indianapolis at Cleveland which was originally scheduled for CBS will be moved to Fox. In the early window, it gives Fox five games and CBS four.

CBS will have two games in the 4:05 p.m. window giving it six regional games on Sunday, December 7.

Fox will have two games in the national 4:25 p.m. window, Seattle at Philly and San Francisco at Oakland.

And the NFL keeps the New England at San Diego game for NBC’s Sunday Night Football.

Because I keep getting questions on Twitter about these crossflexes, it’s apparent that the idea has yet to catch on with the American people. As part of the new TV contract which took effect this season, CBS gets to air selected Sunday NFC games and Fox is allowed to air selected AFC games. Already this season, Fox has aired Buffalo at New England as well as Houston at Tennessee and CBS has aired Seattle at Carolina and Chicago at Minnesota which were all crossflexed.

There will be more crossflexes before the season ends.

Here’s the announcement:

The NFL uses “flexible scheduling” to ensure quality matchups in all NFL Sunday time slots and to give teams a chance to play their way onto primetime and into the late afternoon 4:25 PM ET time slot on CBS or FOX.

For the first time, flexible scheduling may be applied in Weeks 5-10. During that period, flexible scheduling can be used in no more than two weeks by shifting a Sunday afternoon game into primetime and moving the Sunday night game to an afternoon start time.

Also, for the first time, a select number of games are being “cross-flexed,” moving between CBS and FOX to bring potentially under-distributed games to wider audiences.

The NFL will continue to use flexible scheduling on Sundays in Weeks 11-17. For each flexible scheduling week with the exception of Week 17, the NFL announces the start times of games on Sundays no later than 12 days prior to that weekend.

To ensure a Sunday night game and doubleheader games with playoff implications in Week 17, flexible scheduling decisions for that Sunday can be made on six days notice.

That will do it.
