Saturday's Stuff

As I’m watching College Gameday, Chris Fowler might have given us a clue as to where the show will be next week. He said he couldn’t wait to see Texas-Oklahoma next week. I have a feeling Fowler, Corso, Herbstreit and the gang will at the Cotton Bowl next week for the Red River Shootout. I have one suggestion for ESPN, please don’t have Kenny Chesney pick the games with Kirk and Lee next week. He should not be up there for the predictions.

And if you have the NHL Network, it’s great to have the CBC feed of the opening games of the NHL season in Europe. I’m glad to see the NHL Network expanding its live games this sesaon and for more, Maury Brown has the entire NHL Network 2008-09 schedule at the Biz of Hockey.

Let’s do some links.

Since I mentioned the NHL and I’m watching the New York Rangers-Tampa Bay Lightning game, I might as well start off with hockey. Steve Lepore, formerly of the KuklasKorner blog, is now at the NHL Arena Program blog, and he continues to write about NHL TV and media. Today, he tells us about Versus’ announcing lineup for this season and an excellent addition to its sideline reporters.

Continuing with our hockey theme, Ken Schott of the Schenectady Gazette says a local sports radio show will be live from Union College’s hockey media day on Monday. From Ken’s Saturday column, he has an interview with Dan Patrick who says he’s enjoying life after ESPN.

Newsdays’ Neil Best is celebrating the return of hockey. Neil also goes over the on-air sniping between WFAN’s Mike Francesa and Craig Carton.

Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union has the 2008-09 hockey TV schedule for the New York Capital Region.

William Houston of the Toronto Globe & Mail says NHL thug Sean Avery spoke out against Canadian icon Don Cherry during an interview this week.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell is not talking about hockey, but is discussing BusinessWeek magazine’s Power 100 in sports business (which includes NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman at #21). Darren writes that NBA fans are skeptical of this week’s report about referee betting.

Another NBA-related story, this one from the San Antonio Express-News’ Jerry Garcia about the next generation of sports viewing, 3D HD TV and how the NBA is getting involved.

Since we’ve covered the NHL and NBA, we might as well head over to baseball. Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News says the Metroplex is not watching the League Division Series. Barry is sad that the Tampa Bay Rays have won more postseason games than the Texas Rangers. And Barry analyzes the local media wars over the years.

The great Maury Brown who was linked at the top of this entry, has another story, this one in his Biz of Baseball site. He writes that Game 1 of the Dodgers-Cubs series garnered the highest ratings of the League Division Series.

Over to the Sports Media Watch, Paul Sen says the ratings for the MLB Division Series are down from last year although the Vice Presidential debate on Thursday has to be factored in. And the SMW notes that it may have been a full season since their rebranding, but Devil Rays is dying hard.

David Goetzl of Mediapost writes about ESPN expanding its brand into Europe and Mexico.

That will do it for now.

About Ken Fang

Ken has been covering the sports media in earnest at his own site, Fang's Bites since May 2007 and at Awful Announcing since March 2013. He provides a unique perspective having been an award-winning radio news reporter in Providence and having worked in local television. Fang celebrates the three Boston Red Sox World Championships in the 21st Century, but continues to be a long-suffering Cleveland Browns fan.
