Netherlands-Argentina Becomes Most-Watched World Cup Semifinal on ESPN

Well, the World Cup viewing records continue to fall for ESPN. A day after setting a record for the Brazil-Germany 7-1 blowout, ESPN set another standard for Wednesday’s Netherlands-Argentina game.

On Tuesday, Brazil-Germany received a 4.2 rating and 6.643 million viewers.

The Netherlands-Argentina match garnered a 4.3 rating and 6.823 million viewers.

These numbers will be hard to beat in Russia unless the USA is involved in one of the semifinals and even then, getting 6.8 million viewers at noon ET which is when the World Cup semifinals could be played might be difficult.

Anyway, ESPN says Baltimore topped all local markets followed by New York, DC, Hartford/New Haven, Miami, San Diego, San Francisco, Providence, Boston then Columbus and Richmond tied for tenth.

Another 2.4 million people watched the game online bringing the total of viewers on ESPN platforms to 9.2 million which is quite impressive for a non-US game.

Here’s the press release.
