ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown Quotage For Week 3

And completing the Sunday NFL pregame quotage, we have Sunday NFL Countdown from ESPN.

ESPN Sunday NFL Countdown Notes and Quotes: Week 3

ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown host Chris Berman and analysts Cris Carter, Mike Ditka, Tom Jackson and Keyshawn Johnson previewed today’s NFL action. Special guest, pop star and actor, Justin Timberlake, joined the guys on set for the week 3 game predictions. Some excerpts:

Bigger Surprise in Texas: Dallas Cowboys’ 0-2 or Houston Texans’ 2-0…
Ditka: “I think it was an accident waiting to happen. You’ve got the guy (Jerry Jones) who builds the Taj Mahal – which is a beautiful stadium – with the idea that they’re going to be playing in it at for the Super Bowl…Right now you have to find a way to win a football game.”
Jackson: “I think that the Cowboys being 0-2 is not surprising, it is shocking. I don’t thinking people understand what is at stake here…Everything, the stars aligned for them to play the Super Bowl in their own stadium.”

On Cowboys and Vikings and which team is more likely to make playoffs…
Carter: “I don’t care if Brett Favre skips up to their game next week; I’m going with the Cowboys.”

On Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan…
Johnson: “Matt Ryan hasn’t been as sharp as you would like since his rookie year…Watching him in preseason and then watching him in the first two games this year makes me think, are we looking at a guy with a great rookie year like Ricky Mirer did, and then things start stopping up?”

Minnesota Vikings: Panic or Patience?…
Ditka: “It’s panic. You can’t blame it on Brett Favre. They don’t have an offensive line, they don’t have receivers that separate. If you want to win, take a page from the Pittsburgh Steelers, run the football and play good defense.”
Johnson: “Panic. I don’t know for how long, but if you ask Christopher Boomer (Berman), you can wait 10 weeks. I don’t think so. I think they’re panicking right now. They don’t look the same.”
Carter: “I’m in all out panic if they switch quarterbacks. I’m concerned about Percy Harvin. I’m concerned about Mort’s report about wide receivers not being in sync and all the information that Brett didn’t know when he boarded that plane.”

On whether Steelers defense can continue to carry them…
Jackson: “With Ben (Roethlisberger) absent we found out we can win with a running game and defense, when he comes back we’re going to have a great chance to get to the playoffs and beyond.”

On Andy Reid and if he handled quarterback situation correctly…
Jackson: “It takes courage to do what he did. The formula wasn’t exactly right…but he got the answer right. Mike Vick puts the kind of pressure on you as a team that you need.”

On whether the NFL is overprotecting Quarterbacks?…
Jackson: “You can’t legislate hitting the quarterback at a football game…I want to see the game played the way it’s supposed to be played. What I would worry about is where are we headed? Where are we headed next when they make $100 million, $150 million, a red jersey? Don’t touch them, don’t knock them down? You’ve got to think it’s going to get crazy.”

Pop star singer and actor Justin Timberlake joined the guys on set…
On his visit to ESPN’s headquarters: “I just wanted to come and stand next to coach (Ditka).”
On the New Orleans Saints: “They do it ugly, they do it pretty, they find ways to win.”
