In case you did not see or don’t have the opportunity to see SEC Gridiron Live on your local Fox Sports Net affiliate, we have the quotage from this week’s program. Charles Davis, Randy Cross and Tim Couch talk about this week’s action in the SEC and Kristen Akra answers questions from Facebook and Twitter. Here’s the quotage.
SEC GRIDIRON LIVE: WEEK EIGHTThey Said It:
Tim Couch on Cam Newton
- “For Auburn’s offense, it starts and ends with Cam Newton and his skill set. Obviously, he can throw the football and he can make his reads like a normal quarterback…Here’s where he’s different: He can run the football and he sees the field like a running back. You just don’t see that. This guy can do it all for that Auburn offense.”
Randy Cross on the Ole Miss Defense
- “I don’t know if that new mascot is the Rebel ‘Build-a-Bear,’ but they need to ‘rebuild’ this offense after Alabama got done with it.”
Tim Couch on Arkansas’ Backup Quarterback Tyler Wilson
- “When you’re playing behind Ryan Mallett, you don’t get many reps in practice or in games for that matter, so for this kid to stay mentally focused, mentally ready to come in and execute a game plan was very, very impressive to me.”
Randy Cross on Alabama’s 3rd Down Defense
- “Best in the SEC…until about the fourth quarter last week against Ole Miss. Then there was a little bit of an issue, almost 75 percent conversion by the Ole Miss ‘Bears.’ It was almost un-bear-able for Alabama. It wasn’t just the running. It wasn’t just the throwing. It seemed like third and medium, third and long, they converted everything.”
Tim Couch on Derek Dooley
- “Derek Dooley learned from Nick Saban and his years with him to respect the process. Obviously Tennessee is not going to win the SEC Championship this year. {You need to} look for the small things, the little improvements in your program that you can build on week in and week out.”
What do we make of the BCS standings?
- Tim Couch – “To me, it’s too early…There is a lot of football left to be played this season. Let’s see how it plays out over the next few weeks, and the picture will start to clear itself up.”
- Randy Cross – “We’re talking about it. We’re reading about it…That’s what this process is about: identifying a winner eventually, but getting you to talk about it.”
What if Auburn or LSU goes undefeated? Are they going to the BCS Championship Game?
- Tim Couch – “This is the best division in all of college football. If you run the gauntlet and you go undefeated in the SEC West, as Auburn or LSU has a chance to do, if they do that, they certainly deserve a spot in the title game.”
- Randy Cross – “If Oklahoma goes undefeated, another team – whether it’s Oregon or another team – goes undefeated; you still got Boise and you still got TCU; if one of those is still undefeated, no way.”
Randy Cross on Vanderbilt’s match-up against South Carolina
- “Pretty simple formula for Caldwell and the boys: Run that rock the way they are. Control the line of scrimmage. Eat that clock up. And try to keep the Ol’ Ball Coach’s football team on the sideline.”
Buckle Up – Who needs to step up this week?
- Randy Cross – “I’m going to go with the LSU offensive line. Boys, you’ve got some serious work to do this week. That is a big game you’ve got on your hands at Auburn. Keep the ball, run it and protect those quarterbacks.”
- Tim Couch – “I’m going to go with Cam Newton, because John Chavis – the defensive coordinator at LSU – will have something in store for Mr. Newton.”

But if they can stop Cam (good luck with that), they will beat Auburn.”BayouBrother on SECGridironLIVE.com’s live chat – “SuperCam – The last time I saw such an obvious one-man band, the group was called the Jackson 5!!”Davis Whittle on Facebook – “Gamecocks will slam ‘Dores after last week’s disappointment. A bunch of angry chickens looking for revenge. 44-14.”SEC Gridiron LIVE airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET throughout the college football season to more than 22 million cable and satellite households on the FSN regional networks throughout the SEC territory – FOX Sports South, Sun Sports, FOX Sports Houston and FOX Sports Southwest.
