First, Christopher Byrne of the Eye on Sports Media blog has a really good entry on how the Southeastern Conference stepped up during the Atlanta tornado to accommodate its media partners during last week’s SEC Tournament. Consider the undertaking to move the tournament from the massive Georgia Dome to the Georgia Tech campus in just a short few hours and you’ll appreciate what the conference did to get whole thing finished on Sunday.
Second, I rarely link to Bill Simmons’ columns at ESPN.com because many of them do not deal with the media. In fact, I think I’ve only linked to him once or twice since restarting this blog in May of last year. Many of his columns deal with the answering of his e-mail and are not justified to be linked. I respect Bill, I like his writing and remember when he was one of the first to provide links as the Boston Sports Guy, but that person is long gone. Anyway, I will link to the latest column from Bill, actually it’s written by his wife (or ESPN.com would have you think it is) and it’s kind of funny. The Sports Gal, as Bill calls her, gives her picks for the NCAA Tournament.
Wright Thompson has an excellent feature article for ESPN.com about an Alabama family coping with the death of a Marine and how they struggle to keep his memory alive for the daughter he never met.
Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union writes that the local CBS affiliate and Time Warner Cable have their schedules set for Thursday and Friday for the NCAA Tournament.
David Barron of the Houston Chronicle says CBSSports.com has released some more VIP passes for March Madness on Demand.
Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News says Sports Illustrated tries to cover all bases by having multiple covers this week.
Jeffrey Flanagan of the Kansas City Star says FSN KC plans to show 88 Royals games in HD and the channel plans to 140 games altogether this season.
Mike Reynolds of Multichannel News says the New York Mets’ acquisition of pitcher Johan Santana has led to a surge of ad buying for regional sports network, SNY, the cable home of the Mets. And Todd Spangler of Multichannel reports that AT&T U-Verse customers will have exclusive access to on demand video clips of U.S. athletes training for the Summer Olympics in Communist China.
