Late Friday Night Update

Let me give you a Friday night update before shutting down.

The Sports Media Watch is not happy over ESPN/ABC’s choice for opening musical act for its NBA games. And the SMW has some quick ratings blurbs including the sinking ship that is known as the NHL on NBC.

Paul Gough of the Hollywood Reporter says Fox Sports President David Hill has a reason to smile over the last six months starting with the American League Championship Series, leading to the World Series, the NFC Championship, the most watched Super Bowl ever to the Daytona 500.

Tom Hoffarth from the Los Angeles Daily News is amused by ESPN’s latest press release touting a feature on SportsCenter on how Florida kids chase rabbits in the Everglades to get quicker for football. You can’t make this shit up.

Mike Reynolds of Multichannel News tells us that ESPN will air 30 features that will pay tribute to the final year of Yankee Stadium.

Dave McNary of Variety looks at the new ESPN Films venture that will utilize big name movie directors to bring not only documentaries to ESPN, but some features to the big screen. John Dempsey from Variety says CBS will rake in the ad dollars for the NCAA Tournament.

Marc Katz of the Dayton (OH) Daily News says CBS putting the NCAA Tournament on the web for free is going to reduce worker productivity.

Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union says the ESPN Regional Television crew producing the MAAC Tournament this weekend will definitely earn its pay.

Michael Zuidema of the Grand Rapids (MI) Press reports that Comcast subscribers were surprised to see one of its own channels pulled from the lineup.

Bill Shea of Crain’s Detroit Business notes that the Tigers will only have 9 games on “free” TV this season.

That will finish the links for today. I’ll be back Saturday morning with some more.
