TONY GONZALEZ: I think the Denver Broncos are going to go undefeated and get to the Super Bowl and win it all.

QUICK HITS
(On New York Jets QB Geno Smith)

PHIL SIMMS: Geno Smith is an entirely different quarterback right now than we saw last year during his rookie year. You can see him in preseason play. He’s bigger and stronger. So much more confident…The so-called quarterback controversy, the quarterback competition never materialized for the Jets. Why? Because Geno Smith was solid during the off-season. And they had a really good preseason. I’m telling you, the Jets coaches really believe in what he can do for them this year. It’s going to be very good.

(On Rookie Quarterbacks)

BILL COWHER: You don’t develop the player at the expense of developing a team. That’s what you’re talking about.

BILL COWHER SITS DOWN WITH PITTSBURGH QB BEN ROETHLISBERGER
(On what he hopes his legacy will be)

BEN ROETHLISBERGER: I want Pittsburghers and football fans to say that I gave it everything I had on every play. I was tough, and I left it all on the field. I hope at the end of the day they say I was a winner.

BOOMER ESIASON: New England-Seattle, New England wins.
BART SCOTT: Chicago-New England, New England wins.
BILL COWHER: New England beats the New Orleans Saints…
TONY GONZALEZ: I’m going Denver-Seattle, same as last year, Denver wins.

(On Chicago Bears Quarterback Jay Cutler)

LONDON FLETCHER: I like the Bears. (Jay) Cutler just needs to protect the football a lot better. He’s a gunslinger. He just doesn’t care. And then you see his attitude and that rubs you the wrong way… He has a different type of arrogance and different vibe…If you saw when Cutler (would get) sacked, guys (would) not run to pick him up. Because the offensive line, they don’t really like Cutler. He just rubs you the wrong way. He throws interceptions. (When we played the Chicago Bears once), DeAngelo Hall picked him off four times. (Cutler’s) attitude was, ‘I’ll go right back at him again.’ Dude, you just threw four interceptions. Come on man. Get a grip.

(On Jacksonville Jaguars)

BRANDON TIERNEY: I think it’s the right move. For the first time in a while, probably since Coach (Tom) Coughlin was there, it seems like the Jaguars have a plan. And it’s a prudent plan at that. Not that (Chad) Henne isn’t better than Doug Pederson was years ago with the Eagles, when he was kind of a punching bag before they were ready to give the reigns to (Donovan) McNabb. But in essence, and I almost feel bad saying this about Henne because he’s actually pretty competent – he’s got to take his lumps while the rest of the team is augmented and built out. And then you give the reigns to (Blake) Bortles.

FLETCHER: I like the plan that Jacksonville is going to go with. Blake Bortles reminds me of Andrew Luck. He is that type of quarterback. He is an outstanding quarterback with great poise. But the offensive line is not geared to really stand up in pass protection. So it’s smart of Jacksonville to not play him right now.

AMY TRASK: Jacksonville seems to have a plan. From my perspective, that plan starts at ownership. Shahid Khan has been a tremendous addition to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The whole Khan family is involved. They’re increasing revenues, which in turn allows them to spend more on players and facilities. He has been a tremendous addition to the NFL ownership group.

And we’ll end with NBC’s quotage next.
