During its coverage, NBC utilized Super Bowl guest analysts who eventually became full-time staffers (Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison, Hines Ward). Now CBS will bring in Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews for its coverage of the Big Game on February 3. Matthews who has become an overexposed commercial pitchman from Fathead to State Farm to NFL.com, will have the opportunity to be even more exposed on CBS’ The Super Bowl Today joining James Brown, Greg Gumbel, Bill Cowher, Boomer Esiason, Dan Marino and Shannon Sharpe.
There’s no doubt that Matthews has charisma and is well-spoken. We’ll see how he does in a studio setting.
Here’s the CBS Sports announcement.
GREEN BAY PACKERS ALL-PRO LINEBACKER CLAY MATTHEWS JOINS CBS SPORTS AS CONTRIBUTING ANALYST ON “THE SUPER BOWL TODAY” FOR COVERAGE OF SUPER BOWL XLVII ON FEBRUARY 3 FROM NEW ORLEANS
Green Bay Packers All-Pro linebacker and Super Bowl champion Clay Matthews joins CBS Sports as a contributing analyst on the CBS Television Network’s Super Bowl pre-game show, THE SUPER BOWL TODAY, on February 3. The announcement was made today by Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports and Executive Producer, THE NFL ON CBS, and Harold Bryant, Executive Producer and Vice President, CBS Sports.
One of the NFL’s most dynamic, impactful and versatile defenders, Matthews joins host James Brown, Dan Marino, Bill Cowher, Shannon Sharpe and Boomer Esiason, along with Greg Gumbel, on the set of THE SUPER BOWL TODAY for the Network’s coverage of Super Bowl XLVII from New Orleans, La.
This season Matthews ranked fifth in the NFL with 13 sacks and was voted to the Pro Bowl for the fourth consecutive time despite missing four games due to injury. He became the first Packer in franchise history to earn Pro Bowl recognition in each of his first four seasons in the league. Matthews received first-team All-Pro honors from The Associated Press in 2010 and was named second-team All-Pro this season by the AP. He led the Packers to the Super Bowl XLV title in 2011 as Green Bay defeated Pittsburgh, 31-25. Matthews has registered 42.5 sacks since entering the NFL in 2009, which ranks him fifth in the NFL over that span.
That’s it for this post.
