Today begins CBS’ 33rd season of broadcasting college basketball to the American people. And in a nice coincidence for the state of Missouri, it’s a Tigers basketball-football doubleheader on CBS as Missouri hosts UCLA at 12:30 p.m. then the SEC Championship at 4 as the Tigers take on Auburn.
For basketball, Kevin Harlan and Greg Anthony will call the Bruins-Tigers game live from Columbia, MO. Today’s game kicks off a 40 game schedule for the Tiffany Network.

CBS Sports’ 33rd consecutive season of college basketball tips off with a national broadcast on Saturday, Dec. 7 (12:30 PM, ET) with *No. 18-ranked UCLA taking on Missouri.
Kevin Harlan teams with CBS Sports’ lead college basketball analyst Greg Anthony to call the action live from Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo. Mark Wolff, the Network’s coordinating producer of college basketball, produces, and Chris Svendsen directs.
This season, CBS Sports broadcasts 40 games including five conference championships (plus the Big Ten semi-finals), featuring teams from top conferences including the American Athletic Conference, Big Ten, BIG EAST, SEC, ACC, PAC-12, BIG 12 and Atlantic 10.

(On New NCAA Rules)
The new rules will have an impact on the season. I’m a fan of the new rules because it puts the skill of defending back into defense. It will reward teams that can defend with their feet in the box. It’s a good decision by the NCAA.
(On the Fabulous Freshman):
It’s not often that young players have the ability to match the hype and expectations, but this crop of players has been able to do that. I don’t think there’s any question that we’re going to see one of, if not more, of these highly-touted freshman get to the Final Four.
(Teams to Watch)
Villanova has been impressive early on. And I’m excited to see Arizona in-person. Other teams to keep an eye on are Iowa State, UCLA and Wichita State. But with the impact of the freshman and some of the key sophomores, it’s hard to get a total gauge of how teams will look when conference play starts. There haven’t been a lot of true road games, which is one of the biggest testaments of how good a team is.

The games are a little longer but the adjustment period is moving nicely. There are some ups and downs with it so far, but by and large it looks like refs are going to stick with it and teams, coaches and players are going to have to adjust.
(On the Fabulous Freshman):
Some of these kids are stepping right in and playing as if they’ve been down the road for three or four years. They’ve been great to watch. They’re ready to play and that’s a tribute to all the big games they played as high school and AAU players. Kennedy Meeks from North Carolina is another freshman to keep an eye on.
(Teams to Watch)
The team that jumps out the most is Arizona. They’ve been able to incorporate the young players with seasoned veterans and I was impressed with how well they played against Duke in New York City. North Carolina is dangerous. Also, keep an eye on Iowa and Colorado.

(On New NCAA Rules):
All of the hand-wringing about the emphasis on calling hand fouls on the perimeter is overblown. Both the officials and players will adjust rather quickly and the game will be better for it.
(On Michigan State):
Michigan State has the best blend of talent and experience among the top teams. Keith Appling performing consistently could lead the Spartans to a Big Ten and National title.
(On the Fabulous Freshman):
Jabari Parker seems to have the most mature and versatile two-way game right now. Keep an eye on Indiana’s Noah Vonleh, too.
(Teams to watch):
Wichita State shocked many with a Final Four appearance last year. I won’t be shocked if the Shockers do it again. Gregg Marshall’s team is capable. Also, keep an eye on BYU, Dayton, Florida State, Iowa State and UMASS.
