CBS Announces New Lead US Open Play-by-Play Man; CBS Sports Network Announces US Open Coverage

Again, my apologies for not updating the site as much as you are accustomed. The Office Move That Won’t End is continuing and there’s no internet access. Imagine trying to keep informed on a 3G platform. Not easy after having a nice fast wifi router.

Anyway, you don’t care about that. You want to get the latest information on the sports media.

We have a couple of announcements from CBS Sports. First, Bill Macatee has been named the lead play-by-play man for the upcoming US Open replacing Dick Enberg who called the tournament for CBS dating back to 2000. Bill will call the matches with John McEnroe and Mary Carillo.

CBS says Ian Eagle returns to the US Open, but in the capacity that Macatee had, calling secondary matches with Jim Courier. And taking Ian’s place as studio host will be former CBS This Morning co-host and current WCBS-TV news anchor Chris Wragge.

Here’s the announcement from CBS Sports.

BILL MACATEE ASSUMES LEAD PLAY-BY-PLAY ROLE FOR CBS SPORTS’ COVERAGE OF 2012 U.S. OPEN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

CBS Sports’ Bill Macatee assumes the lead play-by-play role joining Mary Carillo and John McEnroe in the broadcast booth for the CBS Television Network’s coverage of the 2012 U.S. Open Tennis Championships. The announcement was made by Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports.

“Bill Macatee is a natural choice to assume the role of lead tennis play-by-play announcer for CBS Sports,” said McManus. “He is a highly-respected, talented and versatile announcer who has been a fixture on CBS Sports’ U.S. Open Tennis broadcasts for 15 years and has called all four Grand Slam events during his career. Bill will be the perfect complement to John McEnroe and Mary Carillo in the booth.”

In addition, CBS Sports’ coverage of the U.S. Open Tennis Championships will see Ian Eagle call play-by-play alongside Jim Courier, and Chris Wragge will serve as a contributor for the Network’s studio updates throughout the two weeks.

CBS Sports presents the U.S. Open Tennis Championships, tennis’ final major of the year and the only one played in the United States, for the 45th consecutive year. Coverage begins on Saturday, Sept. 1 (12:00 Noon–6:00 PM, ET) with men’s and women’s third-round action and concludes with the men’s singles championship on Sunday, Sept. 9 (4:00 PM, ET).

CBS Sports’ more-than 37 hours of coverage will be complemented by CBS Sports Network’s more-than 70 hours of studio and outer-court coverage of the 2012 U.S. Open from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Next, CBS Sports Network has unveiled its coverage plans for the US Open starting on Tuesday with first-ever live coverage of the qualifying tournaments. This will lead into CBS Sports Network’s first-ever live coverage of America’s National Grand Slam tennis tournament at Flushing Meadow in New York City. CBSSN will compliment CBS’ Labor Day Weekend coverage with outer court matches on Saturday, September 1 through Monday, September 3. It marks the first time that CBS will have a partner network airing matches at the same time of its coverage.

The press release is coming after the break.
