Just as the Canada-USA women’s hockey gold medal game set an Olympics streaming record for NBC in the United States, it also set a record for CBC in the Great White North.
CBC says more than 325,000 devices were streaming the event online making it the highest online audience ever for Canada’s public broadcaster.
It broke the previous high which was the Canada-Latvia men’s hockey quarterfinal game on Wednesday. CBC notes that 10.1 million Canadians watched Canada-Latvia.

Friday, February 21 – The Women’s Gold Medal Ice Hockey game on February 20 posted the highest online viewing audience ever to a CBC live event, with a (preliminary) average audience of more than 325,000 on desktop and mobile devices combined. This beats the previous record of 280,000 set during February 19, Men’s Ice Hockey Game between Canada and Latvia.
To date, 32.65 million Canadians (94% of all Canadians) have tuned in to Olympic content on either a French or English platform since February 6 marking an increase of approximately 200,000 over the previously set record on February 19.Notably, the number of Canadians who have watched Olympic content online increased by more than three-quarters of a million yesterday, bringing the total to just under 7.6 million (1 in 5 Canadians) since February 6.
Almost 10.1 million Canadians tuned in to watch Canada beat Latvia 2-1 on February 19, with 1.75 million of them tuning in online.
- The peak minute on CBC was during the final minutes of the game, with 4.674 million viewers at 2:20pm
- With a share of 54%, more than half of all the television tuning on February 19 from 12pm-2:23pm EST was to the Men’s Hockey Game
