CBC’s Programming for Day 6 of the XXII Olympic Winter Games

This is what Canada has been waiting for. The men’s Olympic hockey tournament really gets underway with Team Canada taking on Norway at noon ET on CBC.

Team USA will be playing at 7:30 a.m. and TSN will air its opening game vs. Slovakia while CBC will take Team Russia vs. Slovenia.

In curling, the men’s team faces Denmark at 5 a.m. on TSN2 and the women also take on Denmark on Sportsnet.

The men’s short program in figure skating will be carried in its entirety on TSN.

Lots of stuff and here’s where the breakdown of events will lie on Thursday.

Canada’s Men’s Ice Hockey Team Starts the Tournament off against Norway, and Patrick Chan Looks to Skate Clean in Men’s Short Program

The puck finally drops for Men’s Ice Hockey on Thursday, Feb. 13, with Canada squaring off against Norway in their first game of the tournament. In Short Track Speed Skating, Charles Hamelin begins his drive for a second medal in the Men’s 1,000m and Men’s 5,000m Relay. And in Men’s Figure Skating, three-time world champion, Patrick Chan looks to set a personal best in his Short Program setting up his path to the podium.  The Women’s Short Track 500m will also be contested with medals on the line.

OLYMPIC MORNING:

MEN’S CURLING: CANADA VS. DENMARK (5 – 8 a.m. ET) on TSN2

Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste-Marie will be the skip as Canada’s Men’s team defends it Vancouver 2010 Olympic title.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: LADIES 10KM CLASSIC FINAL (5:30 – 6:40 a.m. ET) on Sportsnet ONE

Russian-born Daria Gaizova will lead the way for Canada in Ladies’ Cross-Country Skiing. She reached the World Cup podium in team sprint in 2010 with Chandra Crawford, and in early 2013 with Perianne Jones. Marit Bjorgen of Norway is the most successful sprinter in Cross-Country World Cup history. She was a triple champion from the Vancouver Olympics and the silver medallist from Torino 2006.

SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING: LADIES 500M, MEN’S 1000M, AND MEN’S 5000M RELAY (6 – 7:15 a.m. ET) on CBC

Ladies’ 500m: In this medal event, Canadian Marianne St-Gelais hopes to improve on her silver medal performance from Vancouver. Canadians Valérie Maltais and Jessica Hewitt round out the Canadian team. South Korean Seung-Hi Park is an early favourite, especially with injured two-time Olympic champion Meng Wang of China out of competition.

Men’s 1,000m: Charles Hamelin of Canada looks to build on his medal count as he races in the qualification heats. Top contender Kwak Yoon Gy of South Korea is the 2012 Overall Champion and current World Record holder at 1,000m.

Men’s 5,000m Relay: Canada is the defending Olympic Champions at 5,000m. They improved on the silver they won in 2006 in Torino. Look for Charles and Francois Hamelin to be joined by Olivier Jean, Charle Cournoyer and Michael Gilday.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: RUSSIA VS. SLOVENIA (7:30 – 10 a.m. ET) on CBC

The Russians want the gold at home with Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeny Malkin leading the team. They finished a disappointing 6th in Vancouver when many thought they had a chance at gold.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: SLOVAKIA VS. UNITED STATES (7:30 – 10 a.m. ET) on TSN

The U.S. men won silver in 2010 and are looking to be at the top of the podium this year. Slovakia finished 4th in Vancouver.

MEN’S BIATHALON: 20KM INDIVIDUAL (8:45 – 11 a.m. ET) on Sportsnet

Canadians Jean Phillippe LeGuellac, Scott Perras and Scott Gow look to improve their 2013 World Championship positions, while eyes are on France’s Martin Fourcade and American Tim Burke to take podium positions.

SPEED SKATING: LADIES’ 1,000M (8:55 – 10:40 a.m. ET) on TSN 2

Canadian Christine Nesbitt is looking to end an eventful career that has seen her win numerous World All Round, World Sprint and World Single Distant titles. She could be in there for a medal in what might be her final Olympic appearance.

OLYMPIC DAYTIME:

WOMEN’S CURLING: CANADA VS. DENMARK (10 a.m. – 1 p.m. ET) on Sportsnet

Canada’s Jennifer Jones looks to keep her team atop the standings with a win over Denmark.

FIGURE SKATING: MEN’S SHORT PROGRAM (10 – 2:30 p.m. ET) on TSN

Three-time World Champion Patrick Chan leads Canadian medal hopes along with teammate Kevin Reynolds and Liam Furis. No Canadian male has ever won a gold medal in Olympic Men’s Figure Skating, which Chan and Reynolds hope to erase.  Spain’s Javier Fernandez will lead the charge along with Japanese contender Yuzuru Hanyu and the resurgent Evgeny Plyushchenko from Russia.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: LADIES 10KM CLASSIC (11 -11:45 a.m. ET) on CBC

Canadians eyes will be on Daria Gaiazova to lead the way for Canada in this event. Norway’s Marit Bjorgen aims to maintain her title as the most successful sprinter in Cross-Country World Cup history; meanwhile Russian hopes lie with 2013 bronze Worlds medallist Yuliya Chekaleva.

LUGE: TEAM RELAY (11 – 12:30 p.m. ET) on Sportsnet ONE

Making its Olympic debut, Canadians Sam Edney, Alex Gough, Tristan Walker and Justin Snit have a solid chance of being inaugural medallists in Sochi. Strong challengers include Germany and Latvia.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: CANADA VS. NORWAY (12 – 2:30 p.m. ET) on CBC

Team Canada, led by Sidney Crosby begins their quest to reclaim their epic 2010 gold medal win as they face-off against Norway, who has never finished better than 8th in Olympic competition.

OLYMPIC PRIMETIME: 

OLYMPIC PRIMETIME hosted by Ron MacLean, CBC-TV and cbc.ca/olympics will be bringing Canadians context from the fifth day of Olympic Competition from Sochi check local listings for times in your area.

Canada looks to improve its record against a tough Norway team.

ALPINE SKIING: MEN’S SUPER COMBINED DOWNHILL (1:55 – 3:30 a.m. ET) on Sportsnet

World leader of the overall ranking in super-combined in 2013 Ivica Kostelic of Crotia will be the one to beat, with Americans Ted Ligety and Bode Miller also on the medal hunt. Canadian Mike Janyk will compete for Canada.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: 15KM CLASSIC (4:45 – 6:55 a.m. ET) on Sportsnet ONE

2013 World Champion Petter Northug of Norway is the favourite, who won four Olympic medals in Vancouver, including two gold, one silver, and a bronze. Russian-born Ivan Babikov is the top Canadian, who had an impressive fourth place finish at the 2013 World Championships.
