CBC’s Programming for Day 14 of the XXII Olympic Winter Games

CBC and its affiliated cable networks will be all over a big day for Canada in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

The big game of the day is of course, Team Canada vs. Team USA in the men’s hockey semifinals that is a rematch of the 2010 gold medal final. CBC will air the game at noon ET.

The other hockey semifinal between Sweden and Finland will be seen on TSN at 7:30 a.m.

Canada goes for the gold in men’s curling against Great Britain at 8:30 a.m. on CBC.

Sportsnet carries the alpine skiing women’s slalom runs at 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

And TSN will carry short track speed skating finals in the men’s 500 meters, women’s 1,000 meters and men’s 5,000 meters relay.

CBC’S COVERAGE OF THE SOCHI 2014 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES: PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS FOR FRI. FEB. 21

Men’s Ice Hockey will once again be in the spotlight during coverage of Day 14 from the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games with two semifinal games being played on Friday morning. Between the hockey games will be the Men’s Curling gold medal game between Canada and Great Britain. Other medal events taking place on February 21 include Women’s Biathlon 4x6km Relay, Women’s Alpine Skiing Slalom, Men’s 500m and 5,000m Relay Short Track Speed Skating and Women’s 1,000m Short Track Speed Skating.

Olympic Overnight on Friday night includes the qualification runs and finals for the Men’s and Women’s Snowboard Parallel Slalom events as well as the Women’s Cross-Country Skiing 30km Mass Start Free Final.

OLYMPIC MORNING: 

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: SEMIFINAL – SWEDEN VS. FINLAND (7 – 9:30 a.m. ET) on TSN

Sweden and Finland will be facing off and only one team will earn a trip to the Final Gold Medal game.  In the Quarterfinals, Sweden pulled away in the third period for a 5-0 win against Slovenia while Finland erased an early deficit to get past host county Russia 3-1, so it could be a win for either Nordic region.

ALPINE SKIING: WOMEN’S SLALOM (7:30 – 9 a.m. ET) on Sportsnet

In the first of two runs, Canada is expected to be represented by Marie-Michèle Gagnon, Erin Mielzynski and Brittany Phelan. International skiers to watch include Mikaela Shiffrin of the USA, Austria’s Michaela Kirchgasser and the always dangerous Tina Maze of Slovenia.

SPEED SKATING: MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TEAM PURSUIT (8:25 – 10:25 a.m. ET) on TSN2

Coverage includes the men’s quarter-finals and semifinals as well as the women’s quarter-finals. In the men’s event, Denny Morrison, Lucas Makowsky and Mathieu Giroux will look to defend the gold medal they won at Vancouver 2010. On the women’s side, Canada’s hopes rest with Christine Nesbitt, Ivanie Blondin and Brittany Schussler, however the Netherlands is considered a heavy favourite.

CURLING: MEN’S GOLD MEDAL MATCH – CANADA VS. GREAT BRITIAN (8:30 – 11:30 a.m. ET) on CBC

Canada will be looking to repeat their gold medal performance in Vancouver 2010, by bringing home another gold medal, in a victory over Great Britain.

BIATHLON: WOMEN’S 4X6KM RELAY (9:15 – 11 a.m. ET) on Sportsnet

Norway should be the team to watch in this event, with Ukraine, Italy and Russia all potential medal threats. Rosanna Crawford, Megan Heinicke, Audrey Vaillancourt and Zina Kocher are expected to line up for Canada.

ALPINE SKIING: WOMEN’S SLALOM FINAL (11 a.m. – 12:25 p.m. ET) on Sportsnet

Canada’s Marie-Michèle Gagnon, Erin Mielzynski and Brittany Phelan hope to qualify for the final run of the Women’s Slalom.

SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING: MEN’S 500M, WOMEN’S 1000M AND MEN’S 5000M RELAY FINALS (11:25 a.m. – 2:15 p.m.) on TSN

MEN’S 500M: Friday’s competition includes the quarter-finals, semifinals and final. Charle Cournoyer and Olivier Jean will represent Canada and will be in tough with the likes of China’s Liang Wenhao, Viktor An of Russia and Freek van der Wart of the Netherlands in the competition.

WOMEN’S 1000M: Canadians Valérie Maltais and Marie-Ève Drolet qualified for the quarter-final and will look to advance to the semifinal and final on Friday. South Korea’s skaters are also expected to pose a medal threat.

MEN’S 5000M RELAY (FINAL): Canada’s Charles Hamelin, Michael Gilday, Oliver Jean, Charlie Cournoyer and François Hamelin are the defending Olympic Champions and 2013 World Champions and will have their sights set on a repeat.

OLYMPIC DAYTIME:

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: SEMIFINAL – U.S. VS. CANADA (12 – 2:30 p.m. ET) on CBC

Canada will take on the United States in the Olympic semifinal showdown to see who will advance to the Gold Medal final. Matt Duchene will be filling in for replace John Tavares as a centre for Team Canada in this game, as Tavares recently suffered a tournament-ending leg injury.

OLYMPIC OVERNIGHT (SATURDAY, FEB. 22):

SNOWBOARD: MEN’S AND WOMEN’S PARALLEL SLALOM QUALIFICATION (12:15 – 2 a.m. ET) on CBC

Caroline Calvé and Ariane Lavigne are expected to represent Canada on the women’s side. They will be up against the 2013 World Champion, Yekaterina Tudegesheva of Russia and Germany’s Amelie Kober who won silver in Torino in 2006 and a bronze at the 2013 Worlds Championship. On the men’s side, Canadians Jasey-Jay Anderson, Matthew Morison and Michael Lambert are expected to compete while Slovenia’s Rok Marguc is should be a medal favourite.

SNOWBOARD: MEN’S AND WOMEN’S PARALLEL SLALOM FINAL (4:15 – 6 a.m. ET) on CBC

Caroline Calvé and Ariane Lavigne hope to compete for medals for Canada in the women’s event while Jasey-Jay Anderson, Matthew Morison and Michael Lambert represent Canada in the men’s event.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: WOMEN’S 30KM MASS START FREE FINAL (4:25 – 6:25 a.m. ET) on TSN

The stars to watch in this event include Norway’s Marit Bjorgen, the 2013 World Champion, and Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland who is the defending Olympic Champion. Daria Gaiazova, Perianne Jones are expected to represent Canada.
