Excerpts of Usain Bolt's Interview with Bryant Gumbel

Next Tuesday, HBO will air an interview with Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter Usain Bolt on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.

Here are some excerpts of that interview:

Bolt’s response to performance enhancing drugs in track & field:

BRYANT GUMBEL: “Has no one ever even approached you and said, ‘Hey, Usain, if you get a little pharmacological help, you can go even faster’? Nobody’s even approached you?”

USAIN BOLT: “No. No.”

BRYANT GUMBEL: “Not once?”

USAIN BOLT: “No.”

BRYANT GUMBEL: “You think you’ll ever outrun the suspicions?”

USAIN BOLT: “To me it doesn’t matter what people think as long as I know I’m clean.”

An unexpected reason Bolt passed on collegiate scholarship offers in the U.S.:

BRYANT GUMBEL: “It’s true that you had U.S. scholarship offers, right, when you were younger?”

USAIN BOLT: “Yeah, yeah.”

BRYANT GUMBEL: “Why didn’t you want to go?”

USAIN BOLT: “I’m a mama’s boy. I’m close to my mom. True story, the first time I went to Europe, I went there for two months, two and a half months. I cried to come home.”

BRYANT GUMBEL: “Because you missed Mom?”

USAIN BOLT: “I was so homesick I couldn’t think about anything else.”

The interview airs with three other segments on Tuesday. I’ll have a real time review after the program airs.
