Bob Costas’ Essay on Sunday Night Football

I’ve become bored by Bob Costas’ halftime commentaries. I’d rather see more highlights than be subjected to his sometimes elitist opinions, but that’s me. Last night during the Giants-Eagles game, Bob droned on about the New York Jets.

BOB COSTAS’ HALFTIME ESSAY ON THE NEW YORK JETS

A smart man once said, “It’s better to be lucky than good.” Better yet to be both. Exhibit A for 2010: The New York Jets. They ended last season on a surprising roll that took them all the way to the AFC Championship game. They began this one surrounded by headlines and bulletin board quotes generated by their entertaining, if not always elegant, turn in the spotlight as the stars of the preseason ‘Hard Knocks’ series.

When the hard knocks started for real, the Jets were up to the task, winning four of their first five. But the way they have won four of their last five has been the real eye-opener, all in the waning moments of regulation or overtime.

Denver helped them out with an egregious pass interference. Detroit with a knuckleheaded personal foul. Cleveland with dubious play-calling deep in their own territory. And then, today, after giving away a 23-7 early fourth-quarter lead at home against the Texans, and down four at their own 28, with 49 seconds and no timeouts left, the Jets somehow did this: two quick completions to LaDainian Tomlinson and then a perfect throw by Mark Sanchez to Braylon Edwards, and that set up this touchdown by Santonio Holmes, who, in the last four Jets victories, has either scored the decisive touchdown with time running out or has made the key play that led to the winning score.

Less than two years ago, Holmes was the MVP of the Super Bowl, but his personal missteps led the Steelers to cut ties with him. More good fortune for the Jets, as he cost them only a fifth-round draft choice. Few first-rounders – or pricey free agents – will pay such dividends this season.

So, the Jets are 8-2. In two weeks, they face the Patriots in Foxboro. The division lead will be on the line. It’s a game the Jets have already proven they’re good enough to win. But just in case, they better hope their luck holds out too.

That will do it.
