Thursday Morning Links

Time for some links now. Let’s start with some weekly Thursday media columns.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette’s Bill Doyle writes that Charter in Central Massachusetts has added NHL Network, but not the NFL Network.

Joanne C. Gerstner of the Detroit News says the lineup of sports radio station WDFN is in a state of flux.

Mel Bracht of the Daily Oklahoman has a story on the 500th show of Big 12 Showcase on FSN. And Bracht has his media notebook. And he gives us his weekend viewing picks.

Scot Kleinfeld of the Ravens 24×7 site grades the Fox NFL Sunday pre-game show.

Richard Sandomir of the New York Times writes that MSG Network’s Gus Johnson and Kenny Smith did not offer their real opinions on the Stephon Marbury disappearance from the Knicks. And in an NFL Notes column from Judy Battista of the Times, Sandomir has a blurb about NFL Network games being available online to Verizon DSL and Fios subscribers.

Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips can now be heard on radio ads for the NFL Network. And Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was in New York yesterday to support a City Councilman’s plan to offer arbitration for parties like the NFL Network that can’t come to an agreement for carriage. Frank Lombardi of the New York Daily News writes about Jones’ visit.

Fred Mitchell in today’s Chicago Tribune says the Bears radio team refuses to offer excuses for the team’s poor performance.

Mike Carmin of the Lafayette (IN) Courier and Journal says while people are unhappy they can’t watch games on the Big Ten Network, there’s not a mass exodus of cable subscribers to satellite. Erin Murphy of the Dubuque (IA) Telegraph Herald recaps the visit of Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez who campaigned for the Big Ten Network.

Ben Prather of fanblogs.com writes that the mtn. has picked up two Emmy Awards.

Anthony Gimino of the Tucson Citizen has a story on the lovely Erin Andrews of ESPN. And Gimino writes about the ESPN crew, which includes Erin, covering the Oregon-Arizona game tonight.

Jeffrey Flanagan of the Kansas City Star reports about some changes to the Royals’ TV and Radio broadcast teams for next season.

Fox Sports.com chronicles the 10 years of Fox Soccer Channel.

From the Quinnipiac College’s student newspaper, the Quinnipiac Chronicle’s Kendra Butters writes about the visit of the lovely Sage Steele of ESPN to the Connecticut campus. That last sentence was too wordy.

And Joseph Sapia of the Ashbury Park (NJ) Press writes about Mr. Stats, Elliot Kalb’s visit to a local middle school. Kalb has worked as a statistician on many a network sports broadcast.

Finally, Neil Best of Newsday links to a great video of a Los Angeles Clippers cheerleader who swishes a backwards halfcourt shot.

That’s it for now.
