NBC Unveils its On-Air Talent Roster for the 2014 Sochi Olympics

Ok, NBC has finally set its lineup for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Sochi is a warm water city in Sochi which averages 50 degrees in February and cost over $51 billion to construct.

This are a few revisions from the lineup I posted earlier this month from the NBC Sports Pressbox website. I’ve already changed that post and I’ll also stick this at the top of the site so you can read both at your leisure.

One of the changes from the website that was announced today, Friend of Fang’s Bites Trenni Kusnierek, formerly of MLB Network and currently of Comcast SportsNet New England, will be the reporter at the Curling venue. The reporter previously announced was Golf Channel’s Steve Sands. He’ll be at the long track speed skating venue. Michele Tafoya was briefly announced as the speed skating reporter, but it appears she will not be in Sochi.

Rebecca Lowe will be a new host for NBC as she’ll be the daytime host on NBCSN, taking the spot that would have gone to Michelle Beadle.

Other first-timers:

  • Leigh Diffey, NBCSN’s Formula 1 and IndyCar voice, who will call the frozen track events, Bobsled, Luge and Skeleton.
  • Nancy Kerrigan who will be a figure skating analyst, most likely in the studio.
  • Kathryn Tappen of the NHL Network will be one of the hosts of the ice hockey coverage along with Liam McHugh.
  • Apolo Anton Ohno becomes a short track speed skating analyst for NBC. He did some work for NBC in London, but this is his first analysis gig.
  • And the aforementioned Sands is the second person from Golf Channel to be tapped for the Olympics. Kelly Tilghman hosted on CNBC for the London games.

For some strange reason, NBC is bringing back the horrific pairing of Matt Lauer and Meredith Viera for the Sochi Opening Ceremony. They were severely criticized for their lack of knowledge during the London Olympics Opening Ceremony. I guess NBC is hoping they get it right this time. We can only hope.

Here’s the NBC release.

With more Winter Olympic events than ever before, competition for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games from Sochi, Russia, will begin one day prior to the Opening Ceremony. As a result, NBC will begin its primetime coverage of the 2014 Sochi Olympics on Thursday, February 6, at 8 p.m. ET. This marks the first time NBC will air Olympic primetime coverage before the Opening Ceremony. The primetime broadcast on Feb. 6 is scheduled to include competition in snowboard slopestyle (men’s and women’s), in which two-time gold medalist Shaun White is expected to compete in slopestyle’s Olympic debut; team figure skating, which is also in the Olympics for the first time; and women’s freestyle moguls.

The overall talent lineup features the return of many of the network’s signature Olympic hosts, play-by-play commentators and analysts with Olympic experience.

NBC Olympics commentator notes:

  • The roster includes Olympians who have won a combined total of 35 Olympic medals (9 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze). Team NBC would have finished second in the Vancouver medal count ahead of Germany and Canada and just behind Team USA.
