A Quick Thursday Sports Media Notebook

As I get back into sports media mode after spending five days in California for my cousin’s wedding, let’s provide some news that you may have missed over the last couple of days. I’m still a bit on West Coast time and I totally understand what Tony Bennett meant when he sang “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” While I wasn’t in SF proper for the entire time, I was in Berkeley, Mountain View, Oakland and Palo Alto, and the energy in the area is just amazing. Makes me want to move out there to be closer to some family and friends.

Anyway, let’s do some quick bullets and provide you some news.

  • Fox Sports’ Joe Buck and Greg Norman get their first taste of U.S. Open action. They’re in North Carolina to provide coverage for Fox Sports Live this week. They’ll do updates and also make appearances on America’s Pregame. While they won’t call any of the action, that will occur next year, they get an opportunity to work on their chemistry and get a chance to work off each other. They will call their first tournament later this year when Fox gets the rights to the Shark Shootout.
  • Speaking of the U.S. Open, Ed Sherman at Awful Announcing has an interview with ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt about the Alleged Worldwide Leader’s last U.S. Open for a while.
  • As the World Cup begins today, satellite radio provider SiriusXM will provide live coverage of all the games through ESPN Radio. JP Dellacamera and Tommy Smyth will be the main team for ESPN Radio as they were in 2010. Games will be heard on SiriusXM channels 84 and 85, as well as SiriusXM FC (channel 94). Subscribers can hear the games either through their satellite radio receivers or through the SiriusXM mobile and table apps.
  • As protests continue in Brazil over the World Cup, it will be interesting to see how rightsholder ESPN will cover the events. It does have ABC News correspondents in the country to report on breaking news. The subway protests in São Paulo before the opening game today are nothing short of horrifying and sad to watch.
  • One other note on the World Cup, I noticed an error on the official FIFA World Cup website. You don’t think FIFA is fixing matches already?
  • Get ready for Hard Knocks with the Atlanta Falcons. The NFL has just announced it.

And it’s time to close the notebook for now.
