I’m not going to go crazy with details on Elizabeth Taylor’s life. The news and entertainment websites will do that sufficiently over the next few hours. However, there’s no way I can ignore the death of one of Hollywood’s giant icons over more than half a century. Elizabeth Taylor became a star at the age of 12 in National Velvet and has been in the spotlight ever since. Her marriages became fodder for the tabloid press. She had a friendship with Michael Jackson that came under fire, but she remained loyal to him. Her weight gain in the 1970’s became material for Saturday Night Live and other shows. But there was no doubting her classic beauty and her ability to act.
She won two Academy Awards. She was a huge box office draw in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. Her name could open doors and turn heads.
Later in her career, Elizabeth Taylor’s name became a brand for jewelry, perfume and AIDS research. She was larger than life.
