Pereira on NFL’s Strict Enforcement of Dangerous Hits: All The Fines Were Fair

KOLB STAYS ON AS EAGLES QB FOR WEEK 7 – Week 7 of The NFL on FOX schedule kicks off with singleheader action on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1:00 PM ET featuring five matchups – each presented in true HD.  In Chicago, a pair of NFC blue bloods face off when Donovan McNabb and the Redskins take on Jay Cutler and the Bears. Thom Brennaman, Troy Aikman and Pam Oliver call all of the action from Soldier Field. Despite an ugly-looking injury on Monday, Vince Young will lead the Titans as they host Kevin Kolb and the Eagles. Mike Singletary’s 49ers look to notch their second victory in a row as they head out on the road to take on DeAngelo Williams and the rushing attack of the Panthers. The 2010 season has been a pleasant surprise in St. Louis. Rookie QB Sam Bradford hopes to continue his impressive year and lead the Rams above the .500 mark when they take on Josh Freeman and the Bucs in Tampa. The 4:00 PM ET window features a battle of the NFC West leaders as Pete Carroll’s Seahawks welcome the Cardinals to Qwest Field.
Coverage begins at 12:00 PM ET with America’s most-watched pregame show, FOX NFL SUNDAY. Terry Bradshaw and Curt Menefee co-host the Emmy Award-winning program and are joined by analysts Howie Long, Michael Strahan and Jimmy Johnson. NFL Insider Jay Glazer presents the latest league news and scoops and comedic prognosticator Frank Caliendo contributes his weekly “Frank’s Picks” segment. NFL rules analyst Mike Pereira is also on hand to go over any impactful officiating issues from the last week. In this week’s show, the issue of helmet-to-helmet hits and what the NFL is going to do about it will be discussed throughout.
PEREIRA: FINES ON HITS WERE ALL FAIRIn light of the NFL’s decision to fine three players for what the league deemed dangerous hits this past week, FOX Sports NFL rules analyst Mike Pereira weighed in on the penalties and the current state of safety in the NFL.
Were This Week’s NFL Fines Fair?
“I think the fines handed out by the NFL to Brandon Meriweather, Dunta Robinson and James Harrison were all fair. They were all on different levels. The Dunta Robinson hit happened so fast and he lowered his head at the last second and you can’t lower your head into a defenseless player, period. That’s the one to me that was the hardest to avoid out of all of them. The one I didn’t like the most was the Brandon Meriweather hit on Todd Heap. That was a deliberate launch. It was avoidable and in my opinion that’s the one that the league was looking at a possible suspension.”
On NFL Safety
“You have to look at the picture of the entire game of football. You have to look at Eric LeGrand of Rutgers who is lying in a hospital bed paralyzed. You have to look at the high school team in Sacramento that doesn’t have enough healthy players to field a team. To me, the game is a bit at the crossroads right now and players are different than in the past. They’re bigger and faster and the equipment is stronger and I think you have to look at them as isolated plays. We are talking about just three isolated plays out of nearly 1,700 last week and the league has to make sure that a trend doesn’t start where players are put in situations that aren’t safe.”
