NBCUniversal’s Programming for Day 8 of the XXII Olympic Winter Games

As we head into the second week of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, we note that some of the athletes whom NBC have marketed heavily will be in action on Saturday.

Long track speed skater Shani Davis who failed in his attempt to three-peat in the 1,000 meters will be back for the 1,500 meters on Saturday. That will be aired on delay in primetime.

Also, short track speed skating is back with the men’s 1,000 meters and bronze medalist in the 1,500 meters, J.R. Celski will take a run for the gold.

Alpine skier Julia Mancuso will participate in the women’s Super G at the Rosa Khutor Alpine Center.

And there will be men’s ski jumping, men’s skeleton, live curling, men’s hockey highlighted by Team USA vs. Russia on NBCSN and the women’s hockey quarterfinals on MSNBC.

Here’s the schedule for the networks of NBCUniversal.

NBC HIGHLIGHTS (Primetime):

  • Women’s Alpine Skiing – Super-G Gold Medal Final: Julia Mancuso will be looking to add an Olympic medal to the three world championships medals she already has in this event. Slovenian star Tina Maze and Swiss sensation Lara Gut should also be contenders.
  • Men’s Short Track – 1000m Gold Medal Final: This is arguably the best event for top American J.R. Celski, who rebounded from suffering a seven-inch gash in his leg at the Vancouver Olympic Trials to win two bronze medals at those Games. Celski will be challenged by Canadian star Charles Hamelin and 28-year-old Viktor Ahn, who skates for Russia eight years after winning three gold medals in Torino for his native South Korea as Ahn Hyun-Soo.
  • Men’s Speed Skating – 1500m Gold Medal Final: Two-time 1500m silver medalist Shani Davis will be looking for his first title in his favorite distance, also known as the Race of Kings. Watch as the 31-year-old from Chicago goes for the crown.
  • Men’s Ski Jumping – Individual K-125 Large Hill Gold Medal Final: Current World Cup leader Kamil Stoch won the normal hill event Sunday, becoming the first Polish ski jumper to win gold in 42 years. Stoch looks for his second gold medal in the K-125, where he is the reigning world champion. The last man to sweep the individual medals could be a threat as well, as Switzerland’s Simon Ammann tries to recapture the magic he demonstrated at the 2002 and 2010 Winter Games.
  • Men’s Skeleton – Competition: The U.S. will have two experienced competitors LIVE in this event with 2010 Olympian John Daly, the son of a retired FDNY paramedic from Long Island, and Wisconsin native Matt Antoine, who just missed out on a spot at the Vancouver Games but is currently having a breakout season with several podium appearances. After the first two of four runs, Daly sits in third, while Antoine is in fourth.

NBC HIGHLIGHTS (Daytime):

  • Women’s Short Track – 1500m Gold Medal Final: In short track, South Korean phenom Shim Suk-Hee, a 17-year-old who has dominated this 1500m event, is the favorite in her Olympic debut.
  • Women’s Cross-Country – 4x5km Relay Gold Medal Final: Norway, led by star training mates Marit Bjorgen and Therese Johaug, is the clear favorite. Kikkan Randall and the U.S. team impressed with a fourth-place finish at the 2013 World Championships, but must outpace the likes of Sweden, Finland and Russia to reach the podium in Sochi.
  • Men’s Skeleton – Competition: The U.S. will have two experienced competitors in this event with 2010 Olympian John Daly, the son of a retired FDNY paramedic from Long Island, and Wisconsin native Matt Antoine, who just missed out on the Vancouver Games but is currently having a breakout season with several podium appearances. After the first two of four runs, Daly sits in third, while Antoine is in fourth.

NBCSN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Men’s Hockey – USA vs. Russia: A storied Olympic rivalry is renewed as Team USA skates LIVE against host Russia. The teams’ rivalry dates to the Soviet Union’s first appearance at the Winter Games in 1956, when the Soviets defeated the Americans en route to their first gold. From 1956-92, the Soviet Union and Unified Team won eight of the 10 Olympic hockey tournaments, with U.S. upsets of the Soviets in 1960 and 1980 the lone exceptions. Russia has so far been unable to carry on the legacy, missing out on gold in its five appearances.
  • Women’s Cross-Country – 4x5km Relay Gold Medal Final (LIVE): Norway, led by star training mates Marit Bjorgen and Therese Johaug, is the clear favorite. Kikkan Randall and the U.S. team impressed with a fourth-place finish at the 2013 World Championships, but must outpace the likes of Sweden, Finland and Russia to reach the podium in Sochi.
  • Men’s Skeleton – Competition: The U.S. will have two experienced competitors LIVE in this event with 2010 Olympian John Daly, the son of a retired FDNY paramedic from Long Island, and Wisconsin native Matt Antoine, who just missed out on a spot at the Vancouver Games but is currently having a breakout season with several podium appearances. After the first two of four runs, Daly sits in third, while Antoine is in fourth.

CNBC HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Women’s Curling – USA vs. Sweden: Sixteen years after her Olympic debut in Nagano, Erika Brown returns to the Games as the skip of the U.S. women’s curling team. The U.S. women will be seeking their first Olympic curling medal after finishing fourth at the 2013 World Championships. Sweden, Great Britain and Canada are among the top international teams.
