DEVELOPING: the mtn. To Shut Down May 31

This being reported by John Ourand of Sports Business Journal/Sports Business Daily. The Mountain West’s cable network, the mtn. will cease operation and go dark on May 31. According to John’s story, the rights to the Mountain West appear to be heading to CBS Sports Network. With the conference’s future in doubt, and three of the league’s marquee teams having left, it makes sense for the Mountain West to sell its rights to an established network.

the mtn. began in 2006 and was the first conference-owned channel and has since been followed by the Big Ten Network in 2007 and the Pac-12 Networks which start this fall.

the mtn. has been plagued by distribution problems since its inception, but had been gaining momentum in the last year. Currently, 44 people are employed at the channel.
