Netherlands-Mexico is Most-Watched Program Ever on Univision

Mexico was doing so well late in its game with the Netherlands when everything came crashing down in the 89th minute with a tying goal, then a controversial penalty kick to win the game for the Dutch and eliminate the Mexicans for the 6th straight time in the Round of 16.

Univision saw a record audience for a US Spanish-language network with 10.4 million viewers. Combined with ESPN’s 6.6 million viewers, Netherlands-Mexico had a total viewership of 17 million which is quite impressive.

Netherlands-Mexico beat Univision’s 2007 telecast of its Destilando Amor series as the most watched program on the network. It’s the most-watched World Cup game ever beating the previous high, the Argentina-Mexico game from the 2010 World Cup which had 9.4 million viewers.

Locally, Univision beat ESPN and was the top-rated broadcast station in Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Phoenix, Sacramento and San Francisco.

Here’s Univision’s announcement.
