Sports Media Weekly No. 158 — Chad Finn, Boston Globe and Peter King, Sports Illustrated

It’s another edition of the Sports Media Weekly podcast. Keith Thibault of Sports Media Journal and I have a good episode on our hands here.

Our “Third Man In” for the News of the Week segment is Chad Finn of the Boston Globe. During this segment, we talked about the following topics:

  • NBC Sports and Yahoo collaborating on two shows.
  • Peter King’s and Peter Gammons’ new website.
  • How the Boston sports media handled the Aaron Hernandez story.
  • How a contrived argument over the Hernandez led to one of the sillier moments.
  • The retirement of Steve Bornstein from NFL Network.

Our guest is Peter King of Sports Illustrated and the new MMQB.SI.com. The following topics were discussed:

  • How MMQB.com came to fruition.
  • The staff of MMQB.
  • How the coverage of the NFL has exploded.
  • The TMZization of NFL coverage
  • Covering the NFL for NBC’s Football Night in America
  • How the late Boston Globe NFL beat reporter Will McDonough paved the way for writers to appear on television.
  • The influence of McDonough and Peter Gammons on King’s career.
  • And some NFL business including the latest on the Cleveland Browns, the NFL in Los Angeles and the possibility of having a team in London.

I always say it’s an action-packed podcast and if you don’t think so after the above description, then I must brand you a Communist. O.k., that’s a bit harsh, but I enjoyed this podcast. I hope you will too. Subscribe to the podcast at iTunes through “Sports Media Journal” or click here to listen.
