TNT puts a spin on the NBA All-Star Game overnight ratings. The network says last night’s All-Star Game in Orlando received a 5.4 overnight rating, the 2nd highest overnight rating in seven years, but comparing it to last year’s contest, the numbers are way down, off 13% from 2011 as Sports Business Daily Managing Editor Austin Karp explains:

And yesterday’s Daytona 500 rain delay coverage received decent numbers for Fox as Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand tells us:

So for the NBA All-Star Game going up against the Oscars, not a good idea as potential casual viewers watched ABC.

NBA All-Star Game on TNT Delivers Second Highest-Rated Overnight Since 2005
During one of the busiest and most-watched nights on television, TNT’s exclusive coverage of the 2012 NBA All-Star Game in Orlando, FL delivered an overall 5.4 US HH rating in metered market overnights. The metered market rating is the second highest-rated overnight since 2005 (5.9 metered market rating).

Additionally, the Top 5 Rated DMAs from last night:

5. Los Angeles: 8.3 HH RtgTNT’s Friday night telecast of the Rising Stars Challenge was the most-watched telecast in the event’s history, delivering a 1.7 US rating and more than 2.7 million viewers. TNT’s All-Star Saturday Night delivered the third most-watched telecast in the 27-year history of TNT’s All-Star coverage with 6,237,000 total viewers.
In an exciting conclusion to Sunday’s coverage, the West All-Stars, led by Oklahoma City Thunder forward and All-Star MVP Kevin Durant edged the East, 152-149.
