Showtime Sports Takes A Record Four Sports Emmy Awards

Probably the overall surprise winner from the Sports Emmy Awards was Showtime. The pay cable service won four Sports Emmy Awards including three for its critically-acclaimed and now award-winning documentary, “A Game of Honor” on last year’s Army-Navy game. Not only did “A Game of Honor” win for Outstanding Sports Documentary, but it also won two other awards, one for Outstanding Sports Promotional Announcement — Episodic and the other for Outstanding New Approaches — Sports Programming.

Showtime’s other award came for last year’s collaboration with MLB Productions, “The Franchise: A Season with the San Francisco Giants.” Showtime and MLB Productions are working once again on “The Franchise” this time with the Miami Marlins. We’ll see if the series gets a second Emmy by this time next year.

Here’s Showtime’s announcement on the prizes won on Monday night.

THE FRANCHISE Wins Outstanding Edited Series For Debut Season With San Francisco Giants At 33rd Annual Sports Emmy Awards in New York City

NEW YORK (May 1, 2012) – SHOWTIME Sports won a network-best four Sports Emmy Awards—including Outstanding Documentary (A GAME OF HONOR) and Outstanding Edited Series (THE FRANCHISE)—at the 33rd Annual Sports Emmy Awards on Monday, April 30 at the Frederick P. Leading the way for the premium network’s record haul was the SHOWTIME and CBS Sports collaboration on the Army-Navy documentary A GAME OF HONOR with three wins.  The feature length film, which takes an unprecedented look at The United States Military Academy at West Point and The United States Naval Academy, won Outstanding SPORTS DOCUMENTARY; Outstanding SPORTS PROMOTIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT–EPISODIC; and Outstanding NEW APPROACHES SPORTS PROGRAMMING with CBSSports.com. The New Approach Emmy win was for the collaborative effort between SHOWTIME and CBSSports.com on the A GAME OF HONOR multi-part web series.

THE FRANCHISE: A Season with the San Francisco Giants, a collaboration with Major League Baseball Productions, earned the Emmy for Outstanding EDITED SPORTS SERIES—ANTHOLOGY for its debut season.  The series featured nine episodes of unprecedented access and unscripted drama from the defending World Series Champions.  The second season of THE FRANCHISE: A Season with the Miami Marlins is currently in production and scheduled to premiere July 11 on SHOWTIME.

That is it.
