Sports Media Weekly No. 175 — Joe Flint, Los Angeles Times & Joe Tessitore, ESPN

Just a couple of editions of the Sports Media Weekly podcast before the end of the year. This week’s podcast is an action-packed one. Keith Thibault of Sports Media Journal and I look at the Week in Sports Media and have a guest as well.

We bring in Joe Flint, media and entertainment reporter from the Los Angeles Times as our “Third Man In.” Among the topics discussed were:

  • Curt Schilling joining ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball replacing Orel Hershiser who is leaving to become an analyst on the new Los Angeles Dodgers regional sports network.
  • The progress of the new Los Angeles Dodgers regional sports network which is scheduled to launch before Spring Training.
    • Whether the Dodgers’ new RSN can gain full carriage in Southern California before Opening Day.
  • A extensive look at the NFL.
    • Flexing the New England Patriots-Baltimore Ravens game out of primetime in Week 16 in favor of the Chicago Bears-Philadelphia Eagles.
    • Rogers signing Canadian media rights for the NFL gaining rights to all Sunday afternoon games, Sunday Night and Monday Night Football as well as all postseason games including the Super Bowl.
    • The weakness of the Thursday Night Football schedule.
  • UEFA Champions League rights going to Fox for a bag of balls.

One of the busiest men in sports broadcasting, Joe Tessitore of ESPN is our guest. We had a lot to discuss in this segment. Among the topics:

  • The announcement that Joe Tess will be the host of a pregame show on the upcoming SEC Network which launches next August.
  • Despite the new gig, Joe says he’ll continue to call Saturday night college football on ESPN/ESPN2.
  • Joe is prepping for his co-hosting role on the Heisman Trophy presentation in New York this Saturday.
  • Joe’s work ethic that allows him to call and host a myriad of sports.
  • Joe saying he won’t work a sport that he’s not familiar with.
  • Joe’s thoughts on the new college football playoff that begins next season.
  • His thoughts on Dick Vitale as the college basketball analyst is in his 35th year at ESPN.

Lots of things to chew on. You can download the podcast at iTunes by doing a search for “Sports Media Weekly,” or you can find it here.
