ESPN Sees Best Numbers for FIFA World Cup Opening Game

ESPN notes that the network received its highest ratings ever for a World Cup opener. Averaging a 2.8 rating and 4.4 million viewers, both numbers are the highest for the first game of a World Cup on ESPN dating back to 1994.

The rating is an astounding 49% higher than the 2010 opener in South Africa when the host nation took on Mexico and viewership is 55% better than 2010.

Combine this with Univision’s viewership of 5.1 million and you have an audience of 9.5 million viewers and to compare that with other events, it beats every NHL Stanley Cup Playoff game, all NBA postseason contests except for the Finals, all NASCAR telecasts and several national MLB telecasts.

Here’s ESPN’s announcement.
