BREAKING NEWS: NBC Snags NASCAR Away from ESPN/Turner

Well, here’s some big news on a Tuesday in a month of big news. Tripp Mickle and John Ourand report in Sports Business Daily that NBC has won the the rights to the second half of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series meaning Turner and ESPN will be out after next season.

According to Mickle and Ourand, NBC and NBC Sports Network will share some races. NASCAR had reportedly wanted some of its Chase for the Sprint Cup back on broadcast TV. It appears some of the late season races will be on NBC leading into Sunday Night Football.

NBC had aired NASCAR races between 2000 and 2007. This is a big win for NBC. So over the last year, it has won Formula 1, English Premier League and now NASCAR.

NBC also gets the second half of the Nationwide Series.

Last October, Fox renewed its half of the Sprint Cup Series.

UPDATE, 2:35 p.m.: In today’s Sports Business Daily, Mickle and Ourand report that TNT’s six race Sprint Cup package and the first half of the Nationwide Series are still open for bids. Fox and Turner are reportedly candidates for that package.
