Sports Media Weekly No. 162 — Matt Yoder, Awful Annnouncing & Jim Andrew Miller, ESPN Book and the New York Times

Back to podcast after a week’s absence while I was away. Actually, I’m partly back. I was missing from the “Third Man In” segment due to some scheduling conflicts so Keith Thibault of Sports Media Journal and Matt Yoder of Awful Announcing handle the News of the Week segment.

Among the topics discussed:

  • The high amount of NFL pregame shows this season.
  • The debut of “Olbermann” on ESPN2.
  • ESPN’s Mark May and Skippy Bayless making up stories.
  • The New York media’s disdain for Jets coach Rex Ryan.
  • Slow ratings out of the gate for Fox Sports 1.

I wish I could have been part of this segment. But in the guest segment, I’m solo with the co-author of the fine tome, Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN and a contributor to the New York Times, Jim Andrew Miller. Among the topics discussed in this segment:

  • The return of the prodigal son, Keith Olbermann, to ESPN.
  • ESPN’s withdrawal from the collaborative documentary on NFL concussions with PBS’ Frontline.
  • The New York Times’ series on ESPN and college football.
  • ESPN’s feelings on the rise of Fox Sports 1.
  • ESPN’s reloading for the bidding for the NBA rights and for the Big Ten.
  • How Jim started writing for the New York Times on ESPN.
  • The progress of making his book into a movie.
  • And from his previous book on Saturday Night Live, we get Jim’s feelings on the upcoming season of SNL.
