Outside The Lines: Elena Delle Donne

In case you missed it this morning, this is the Outside The Lines segment on former UConn basketball recruit Elena Delle Donne who walked away from the school just two days into her enrollment and then after some soul searching, decided to walk on at the University of Delaware volleyball team and become a star player despite playing the sport for a year.

Interesting stuff on her burnout and why she decided to leave basketball.

And here’s an extended interview with her and ESPN’s Mark Schwartz.

It’s an interesting story. I have some compassion for her leaving a sport in which she had no passion. I also wonder about her dad pushing her so hard to do something and which he did not see the warning signs. Unfortunately, he did not consent to do an interview with Outside The Lines. Perhaps Mary Carillo of HBO’s Real Sports, who also wants to do this story can complete it by getting the parents to agree to do an on-camera interview.
