Videos of the Week

I forgot to post Videos of the Week! Well, since NFL season is coming up, that means we’ll be blessed or forced to listen to certain announcers. I’ve found that CBS’ crew for the AFC has been quite enjoyable since it returned to the NFL in 1998. Jim Nantz is ok, but guys like Greg Gumbel, Dick Enberg, Ian Eagle and Don Criqui are all experienced and give you the nuts and bolts of the game. And one guy who was hired by CBS in 1996 and made a mark by first doing the NCAA Tournament and then college football, was Screamin’ Gus Johnson. Gus has been teamed with Brent Jones and Solomon Wilcotts. But he’s really made his name with classic calls of last second baskets during the NCAA Tournament.

Here’s a retrospective CBS put together in 2006 of its 25 years of broadcasting the tourney and Gus talks about doing the UCLA-Princeton game in which the Tigers upset the then-defending National Champions in the first round.

Ten years later, Gus had the opportunity to call UCLA-Gonzaga in which the Bruins came back to beat the Zags and Johnson had a great call. Here are the final 40.8 seconds. And see Adam Morrison cry like Amber on Big Brother 8.

And this is Greg Gumbel’s reaction to the call.

From this year’s tournament, Gus’ various calls from the first and second round sub-regional in Lexington, KY.

And probably the most famous call “The slipper still fits!” Gonzaga beats Florida in 1999.

It’ll be nice to have Gus back in the saddle for CBS when the tournament returns in March.
