This Tuesday, University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma will be seen on CBS College Sports talking about a whole bunch of issues including his former star, Diane Taurasi who recently tested positive for a banned substance which could prevent her from playing in the 2012 Olympics. CBS College Sports Network airs a special edition of the network’s in-depth interview series ONE2ONE on Tuesday, Feb. 15 (11:00 PM, ET), featuring Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma. CBS College Sports Network basketball insider Jon Rothstein conducts the interview.
Auriemma discusses a range of topics, including his relationship and rivalry with Tennessee coach Pat Summitt, former UCONN player Diana Taurasi, who recently tested positive for a banned substance and breaking UCLA’s winning streak.
Following are excerpts from the interview:
(On UCONN’s rivalry with Tennessee):
Auriemma: There was Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. I think it got a little bit out of control at times on my end, having fun and poking fun. I remember saying something about that they were the evil empire and I don’t think down in Knoxville they know about the Yankees. So they didn’t realize I was talking about the Yankees and we were the Red Sox. They were the big guys and we were now knocking on the door. So maybe that had something to do with it.(On Diana Taurasi):
Auriemma: I don’t know that Diana is going to take something that she knows is on the banned substance list and might keep her out of the Olympics. I just know Diana too well and she’s not going to do that. I don’t think people understand how much the Olympics mean to her, how much basketball means to her…I don’t know how it’s a performance enhancing drug…In my mind, I don’t buy it.To see a video clip of the interview, click here: http://bit.ly/gKD0cy
