33rd Annual Sports Emmy Nominations Announced

by , under 24/7, ABC, Al Michaels, Bob Costas, Bryant Gumbel, CBS Sports, CBSSports.com, Charles Barkley, College Gameday, Cris Collinsworth, Dan Patrick, DirecTV, Doc Emrick, E:60, ESPN, ESPN 3D, ESPN.com, ESPN2, Fox Sports, Golf Channel, HBO Sports, Inside the NBA, Inside the NFL, James Brown, Jim Nantz, Joe Buck, Marv Albert, Michele Tafoya, Mike Mayock, MLB Network, MLB.com, MLBAM, NBA TV, NBA.com, NBC Sports, NBC Sports Group, NFL Network, PGA.com, Real Sports, Showtime, SPEED, Sport Science, Sports Emmy Awards, TBS, TNT, truTV, Turner Sports, Versus

We have the nominations, all 170 in 33 different categories, for the 33rd Annual Sports Emmy Awards. They just came out today. There are some surprises like massive hockey charlatan Pierre McGuire nominated in the Sports Reporter category and for some really strange reason, Skippy Bayless of ESPN2′s First Take was nominated for Best Studio Analyst. What analysis does he do besides yelling and having massive manlove for Tim Tebow?

There are some of the usual suspects are nominated, Bob Costas for Best Studio Host, Al Michaels in Play-by-Play, Cris Collinsworth for both Studio and Game Analyst.

Some of the nominations I agree with include Mike Mayock for Best Game Analyst, College GameDay and Football Night in America as Best Studio Shows and all of the movies in the Sports Documentary category. Sports documentaries were strong this year and I have trouble picking one although Catching Hell, the ESPN Films effort on Steve Bartman and the Chicago Cubs might be the weakest of the bunch, but the doc was still very good.

Ok, get ready to scroll, the entire list is below. We do need a page break so the list of nominees will after the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences press releases.

A Few Saturday Links

by , under 38Cliches, CBS Sports, Charles Barkley, ESPN, ESPN2, Glenn Geffner, iPad, MLB, NCAA Tournament, Sports Emmy Awards, Tennis Channel, Time Warner Cable, Turner Sports, Twitter

Unfortunately, I was not able to do the Friday megalinks as I was traveling in between two offices and had to hit a couple of places in between. And when I got home, I wasn’t in the mood to do links. But I may incorporate some Friday stories here in the links. Let’s take a look at what we have.

From the Wall Street Journal, Sam Schechner has a story where networks are angry with Time Warner Cable for providing their programming on iPads. This is going to be an interesting battleground because if Time Warner wins, the networks will have no control over their content on tablets. Keep an eye on this as sports is involved as well. Thanks to John Daly of The Daly Planet NASCAR blog for the link.

Georg Szalai of the Hollywood Reporter says despite network protests, Time Warner Cable is forging ahead with its iPad app.

Andrea Morabito from Broadcasting & Cable notes that the NCAA Tournament’s ratings continue to soar on CBS and Turner.

Joel Stein from Bloomberg Businessweek takes a look at some of the fashion faux pas made by various sports broadcasters. Yes, there’s a slideshow that goes with it.

Mike Reynolds of Multichannel News says ESPN2 and Tennis Channel will be all over the Sony Ericsson Open starting today.

Marcus Vanderberg of SportsNewser says Nasty Boy Rob Dibble has found a new radio home.

Brad Cohen from SportsGrid has the too-steamy-for-TV ad featuring Serena Williams.

The Nielsen Wire blog notes that the two most marketable MLB players are New York Yankees.

Newsday’s Neil Best has ESPN’s Jay Bilas standing by his anti-VCU comments from before theNCAA Tournament. This story came out before VCU won last night.

Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union has your NCAA Tournament Regional Final tip times for the weekend.

Jim Williams of the Washington Examiner notes that the IndyCar racing season gets underway on Sunday.

Barry Jackson from the Miami Herald says Charles Barkley has added some much needed humor into the NCAA Tournament studio.

Tom Jones of the St. Petersburg Times reviews the Sports Emmy Award nominations.

At the Grand Rapids (MI) Press, Michael Zuidema discusses how ESPN’s MLB analysts see the Detroit Tigers faring this season.

John Kiesewetter at the Cincinnati Enquirer talks with Bearcats and Pawtucket Red Sox voice Dan Hoard about his very busy schedule.

In his blog, John says some of Dan’s professional goals now surprise him.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Bob Wolfley gets responses from ESPN’s Jay Bilas and Fran Fraschilla to shots taken at them by former URI and Texas coach Tom Penders.

Ed Sherman in Crain’s Chicago Business has his winners and losers in sports business and media.

Dan Caesar at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that former Cardinals first baseman Jack Clark is back on the air in the Gateway City.

John Maffei of the North County Times has enjoyed the CBS/Turner coverage of the NCAA Tournament.

Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News is not a fan of Charles Barkley on the NCAA Tournament. I disagree.

Tom has his extensive media news and notes.

Matt Clapp from Awful Announcing has video shot from my Twitter pal YankeeMegInPHL of Charles Barkley taking a swig of some mystery liquid on the CBS/Turner set last night.

Lou Clinton of 38 Cliches notes that his arch-nemesis, Florida Marlins announcer Glenn Geffner is now on Twitter.

I think we’ll end it there for this Saturday.

Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 49

by , under NCAA Tournament, Podcast, Sports Emmy Awards, Sports Media Weekly, Twitter

I can’t believe Keith Thibault of Sports Media Journal and I have 49 podcasts, but we have. You can count them! On Thursday, Keith and I convened via Skype once again and recorded the latest edition of the Sports Media Weekly Podcast which needs a new name. If you have any suggestions, let me know and I’ll forward them to Keith to see if your title can become the new name of our podcast. And I’ll see if I can come up with a prize like a free book or some other type of swag.

In the latest edition of the podcast which again is guestless, Keith and I talk about the NCAA Tournament and how CBS/Turner is doing on the game production. We both say positive things about the games being aired nationally on four platforms, plus we disagree on a couple of minor points.

We then go to the Sports Emmy Award nominations which were released this week. Keith and I predict who will win in some of the “glamor” categories.

And we wrap up the podcast by talking about the proper use of Twitter by sportswriters. Keith thinks sportswriters should have two accounts, one for their reporting and another for their personal tweets. I have no problem if they want to show a bit of their personality and showing us a different side to them. And I give a shout out to Joe Haggerty of Comcast SportsNet New England, but I course, forget his name in the process. Sorry, Joe.

Overall, a good podcast and one which re-introduces us to our adoring public. Of course, I’m being totally sarcastic.

Anyway, find the podcast and subscribe to it at iTunes by searching for “Sports Media Journal” or you can find it

Announcement of the 32nd Sports Emmy Award Nominations

by , under Al Michaels, Sports Emmy Awards

The National Academy Television Arts and Sciences released the Sports Emmy Award nominations today. Here’s the press release from the Academy on the announcement which also tells us this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. Last year it went to John Madden. This year, it will go to his Monday Night Football and Sunday Night Football partner, Al Michaels.

NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES ANNOUNCES NOMINEES FOR THE 32ND ANNUAL SPORTS EMMY® AWARDS

Winners to be Honored During the May 2nd Ceremony At Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center
Al Michaels to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

New York, NY – March 22, 2010 – The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) today announced the nominees for the 32nd Annual Sports Emmy® Awards.

More than 150 nominees from a record number of entries were announced in 33 categories including outstanding live sports special, live series, sports documentary, studio show, promotional announcements, play-by-play personality and studio analyst.  The Awards will be given out at the prestigious Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center located in the Time Warner Center on May 2nd, 2011 in New York City.

This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports will go to the Legendary Sports Broadcaster, Al Michaels.

“Do you believe in miracles?” “It’s amazing how his call of the U.S. Olympic hockey team’s 1980 ‘Miracle on Ice’ resonates to this day,” said Steve Ulrich, Executive Director of the Sports Emmy Awards.  “Al’s legacy in sports television goes far beyond that moment, having called some of the greatest games in the history of the NFL, Major League Baseball, the NBA and the NHL.”

One of television’s most respected journalists, Michaels, the voice of NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” since its inception in 2006, has covered more major sports events than any sportscaster, including 20 years as the play-by-play voice of “Monday Night Football.” He is the only commentator to call the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals and host the Stanley Cup Final for network television.  Among his many accolades, Michaels has captured six Emmy Awards for Outstanding Sports Personality – Play-by-play (1986, 1989, 1995, 2000, 2007 and 2008) and has three times (1980, 1983 and 1986) received the NSSA Award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association; he was inducted into the NSSA Hall of Fame in 1998. Michaels was named Sportscaster of the Year in 1996 by the American Sportscasters Association, and, in 1991, he was named Sportscaster of the Year by the Washington Journalism Review.

Regarded as one of the best baseball announcers of all time, Michaels was ABC’s lead baseball play-by-play announcer during the network’s coverage of Major League Baseball. He has also earned praise as a journalist and became just the second sportscaster in history to receive a News Emmy nomination for his coverage of the San Francisco earthquake during the 1989 World Series.

In addition to his iconic call of the 1980 Olympic hockey game in Lake Placid, Michaels called the figure skating and hockey at the 1984 Winter Games in Sarajevo, and all track and field, in addition to road cycling, at the Summer Games in Los Angeles. He also covered hockey during the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic Games and last February served as the daytime host of NBC’s coverage of the Vancouver Olympics.

In addition to Al Michaels, many of the today’s leading sports broadcasters, personalities and television professionals will be in attendance as presenters at the event.

So there you have the press release. The full list of nominees can be found here and a breakdown of awards by network and series can be found here.
