Golf Channel Announces Extension To Air LPGA’s Kraft Nabisco Championship

by , under Golf Channel, LPGA

The first major tournament on the LPGA calendar, the Kraft Nabisco is this week and Golf Channel has announced a three year extension to air the Championship beginning in 2013.

Golf Channel took over the rights to the Kraft Nabisco, formerly known as the Dinah Shore Invitational from ESPN2/CBS in 2011. Before last year, three rounds aired on ESPN2 and the final round on CBS. Since then, Golf Channel has given the major four round coverage and increased viewership in each of the two years it has aired the tournament.

It also marks the first of two major LPGA tournaments on Golf Channel, the LPGA Championship being the other.

We have the announcement regarding the rights extension.

GOLF CHANNEL ANNOUNCES THREE-YEAR TV RIGHTS EXTENSION TO KRAFT NABISCO CHAMPIONSHIP

LPGA Tour’s First Major of the Year Exclusively on Golf Channel
Golf Channel to Air 35 Hours of Coverage Beginning with Wednesday’s LPGA Majors Golf Central Special

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 27, 2012) – Golf Channel and the LPGA Tour have agreed to an exclusive three- year extension of the network’s exclusive rights to the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the season’s first major championship. The joint announcement was made this week by LPGA Tour Commissioner Mike Whan and Golf Channel President Mike McCarley.

“Based on the strong promotional advertising, the incredible tournament coverage and ‘storytelling,’ and the record-high viewership results that occurred in 2011, we’re excited to partner with Golf Channel and continue showcasing the LPGA’s first major,” Whan said.

Golf Channel viewership for its inaugural coverage of the Kraft Nabisco Championship in 2011 kicked off with the tournament’s highest-rated and most-watched first round in 18 years, which was followed by a second round that was the highest in 17 years. Golf Channel also aired 280 percent more hours of coverage than the previous year when the event aired on CBS and ESPN2 (34 hours in 2011 versus 9 hours in 2010). Average viewers for the entire tournament increased 29 percent from 2010 (511,000 on Golf Channel versus 395,000 on CBS/ESPN2).

Overall ratings for the LPGA Tour on Golf Channel in 2011 were up 30 percent over the previous year, helping fuel Golf Channel to its most-watched year in its 17-year history.

“Extending our exclusive partnership with the LPGA Tour and the Kraft Nabisco Championship is great for fans of the game and the excitement that the season’s first major championship brings,” McCarley said. “We’re looking forward to showcasing these compelling stories for our viewers and providing a home for the tournament for years to come.”

The Kraft Nabisco Championship is one of two LPGA Tour major championships airing exclusively on Golf Channel in 2012, also including the LPGA Championship (June 7-10). This week’s event will host an elite field, headlined by defending champion Stacy Lewis and current World No. 1 Yani Tseng, who already has won three times in 2012 and is seeking her sixth major title. Golf Channel will begin its coverage with a one-hour Golf Central Special Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET on the eve of the Kraft Nabisco Championship, kicking off the LPGA Majors season.

Golf Channel will air six hours of daily, live coverage Thursday and Friday from Noon-3 p.m. ET and 6:30-9:30 p.m. ET. Weekend coverage will air live from 4:30-8:30 p.m. ET. Scott Walker will conduct post-round interviews and report for Golf Central throughout the week. Golf Central also will precede all four rounds of the Kraft Nabisco Championship with half-hour preview shows featuring highlights, interviews and analysis.

Throughout the year, LPGA players will be “mic’d up” during their opening rounds of play.

    Late Night Thursday Links

by , under ABC, Captain Blowhard, CBC, Comcast SportsNet, Dale Arnold, Dan Patrick, Deadspin, ESPN.com, ESPN2, HBO Boxing, LPGA, Michelle Beadle, MLB Network, Mr. Tony, NASCAR, NBA, NBC Sports, NHL, Olympics, Rogers Sportsnet, Slap Shot, Sports Talk Radio, Super Bowl, TV Ratings, Verizon, WEEI, World Cup

I wasn’t able to provide links during the day and I keep accumulating sports media stories and I don’t want to get into this pattern where I can provide links Monday through Wednesday, but not from Thursday through Sunday. That’s not good especially since you have come to expect linkage just about every day. So I’ll burn the midnight oil and do some linkage for you.

Let’s start with Milton Kent of Fanhouse who fears that Dan Patrick might be risking becoming an enabler to Charlie Sheen after two interviews that have been picked up by the tabloid press.

To Advertising Age where Michael Bush looks at the Super Bowl ads that remain on the national conscience while other brands have faded from memory.

Rich Thomaselli from AdAge looks at the LPGA’s new ad campaign in an attempt to raise awareness and bring the tour’s stars to the forefront. You might recognize the name of a certain sports media blogger in the story.

Dan Fogarty at SportsGrid explains why you haven’t seen Friend of Fang’s Bites Michelle Beadle on ESPN2′s SportsNation recently.

Also from SportsGrid, Brad Cohen feels Tony Kornheiser looks bad over his refusal to speak about Dan Snyder’s lawsuit against the Washington City Paper on his radio show.

Michael David Smith at Pro Football Talk says Mr. Tony loses credibility the longer he protects Snyder.

Jeff Neuman at Real Clear Sports has an interesting article on the making of the great movie, Slap Shot and some casting decisions that might have changed the movie we know and love.

At Adweek, Anthony Crupi tries to read between the lines at comments made by new NBC Universal CEO Steve Burke on whether the network will actually make a run at bidding for the 2014/2016 Olympics.

To the Indiana University National Sports Journalism Center where Eric Deggans of the St. Petersburg Times writes that sports broadcasters should be held to the same standard as broadcast news journalists when it comes to endorsing products.

The Hollywood Reporter has Dan Patrick explaining how he got Charlie Sheen on his syndicated radio show.

Sofia M. Fernandez of the Reporter says Comcast’s new 3-D channel debuts Sunday with the airing of the NHL’s Heritage Classic.

    R. Thomas Umstead of Multichannel News notes that HBO has scheduled its first boxing pay-per-view event of 2011.

Mike Reynolds of Multichannel reports on ESPN’s dedicated channels being available online to Verizon Fios TV subscribers.

Alex Weprin from SportsNewser notes that the producers of the Broadway play, Lombardi, now want to bring another sports story to the Great White Way.

A.J. Daulerio of Deadspin laments the loss of contributor Katie Baker to Captain Blowhard’s yet-to-be-named project at ESPN.com.

Steve Lepore at Puck The Media provides the market-by-market breakdown for the early games of NBC’s Hockey Day in America doubleheader.

The Boston Herald’s Jessica Heslam talks with outgoing WEEI midday host Dale Arnold who still is shellshocked about losing his show.

John Kiesewetter of the Cincinnati Enquirer says the Reds will be seen quite often on MLB Network during Spring Training.

Bob Wolfley from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel searches for the lost younger NASCAR viewer.

Bob says the Miami Heat are burning up the NBA’s ratings.

Ed Sherman at Crain’s Chicago Business notes that the Windy City will be the host and the focus for NBC’s Hockey Day in America.

Michael Olivera of the Canadian Press notes that viewers are cutting the cable as they find affordable ways to watch their favorite hockey team either through their mobile phones.

The Canadian Sports Media Blog says CBC and Rogers Sportsnet will team up to air every game of the Women’s World Cup later this year.

Sports Media Watch says the Chicago Bulls are on a pace to set a regular season ratings record for Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

SMW says the NBA’s marquee teams are helping to raise the ratings for ABC’s Sunday games.

I think that will hold us over until the regular Friday features start posting. Good night.

by , under Golf Channel, LPGA

This is a first. Golf Channel has sent its entire LPGA schedule for 2011. I say good on Golf Channel! Many of the tournaments especially from the US will be aired live. Those tournaments played in Europe or Asia will be tape delayed. This is something I discussed with Advertising Age and I’ll provide the link later tonight. We have the entire schedule for you below.

Golf Channel LPGA Tour Season Begins Friday

Two Major Championships and The Solheim Cup Headline 22-Event Schedule in 2011

Exclusive Golf Channel Coverage of Kraft Nabisco Championship

Marks Season’s First Major, March 31

Annika Sorenstam Interview from Today’s Morning Drive: Annika Sorenstam Interview
Cristie Kerr’s Interview from Wednesday’s Morning Drive: Cristie Kerr Interview

ORLANDO, Fla., (Feb. 17, 2011) – Golf Channel’s coverage of the 2011 LPGA Tour season is the most anticipated in the network’s history and will feature full coverage of the first two major championships of the year and shot-by-shot coverage of the The Solheim Cup, one of the biggest events in women’s sports.  The network’s coverage of the 2011 LPGA Tour season will kick off tomorrow with LPGA Thailand at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Headlining the 2011 broadcast schedule will be live coverage of the Kraft Nabisco Championship (March 31-April 3), marking the first time the major championship will be on Golf Channel.  The network will broadcast 20 hours of live coverage throughout the tournament, including six hours of live coverage on Thursday and Friday.  In June, Golf Channel will air live the second major of the year, the LPGA Championship (June 23-26), and will follow later in the season with more than 24 hours of live, shot-by-shot coverage of The Solheim Cup (Sept. 23-25), from Killeen Castle, Ireland.

In total, Golf Channel will broadcast 22 LPGA Tour events – 12 domestic and 10 international.  Twelve of the 14 events in North America will be televised live.  Golf Channel will program coverage of the remaining seven international events – most originating from Asia – at optimal viewing times.  The Solheim Cup will air live.

Golf Channel is entering the second year of a 10-year partnership with the LPGA Tour as the exclusive cable home.  In 2010, the network introduced and featured several unique production elements to enhance the telecasts and showcase the personalities of LPGA Tour players, most notably fitting players with microphones during competition.  “Mic’d Up” now also is featured on PGA TOUR telecasts.

Golf Channel will introduce a new, enhanced graphics package for its LPGA Tour telecasts, beginning with the LPGA Founders Cup, (March 17-20). During Friday telecasts, a player in the field will join the network’s announcers as a player analyst.  Other popular elements also will return, including rookie and player profiles, interviewing players as they are walking the fairways and making the turn on the weekends (Walk and Talks), and weekly tips from players.

Golf Channel will continue to provide enhanced news coverage of the LPGA Tour and will produce several programs with LPGA stars throughout the year.

Let’s do some links for you on this Thursday. I hope to be able to do a bit more in the later part of the week unlike previous weeks where the links stop on Wednesday. Plenty of stuff to go over.

Michael Hiestand has a couple of articles on CBS/Turner changing the way we’ll watch the NCAA Tournament starting in March. First, he says times will be staggered and games will be spread out more so we can watch games from noon until midnight in the first three rounds of the tourney.

Mike says cable will change the way we’ll be viewing the tournament from now on.

Sports Illustrrated’s Richard Deitsch has the starting times and networks for the first week of the NCAA Tournament.

Sports Business Daily also goes over CBS/Turner’s plans for the NCAA Tournament.

This has nothing to do with sports, but more with the power of social media and establishing a brand. Douglas Alden Warshaw writes in Fortune about Conan O’Brien’s fast rise on Twitter and how he uses social media to engage with his audience.

Jon Lafayette of Broadcasting & Cable writes that the Chevy Camaro Super Bowl ad is now the most-watched TV commercial ever.

DCRTV‘s Dave Hughes writes in Press Box about the O’s decision to leave CBS Radio’s FM sports station to return to WBAL.

The lovely Jen Royle of MASN says while the Orioles have left CBS Radio, Baltimore where she works full-time, she’ll figure out her next move soon.

Gary Smits of the Florida Times-Union praises the PGA Tour and Golf Channel for getting behind some marquee groupings during the early rounds of golf tournaments to help ratings and on-site attendance.

As if you needed a reminder, here it is, the best theme in all of sports.

Steve Lepore at Puck The Media speaks with Versus’ Brian Engblom about his new role as the on-ice analyst.

by , under Brett Favre, Comcast, ESPN, ESPN 3D, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNW, Fox Sports, Golf Channel, HBO Sports, LPGA, MLB, NESN, NFL, NHL, Rose Bowl, Soccer, Super Bowl, TV Ratings, Versus

I’ll provide some linkage for you today.

At Mediapost, David Goetzl also writes about Versus’ ratings.

David notes that ESPN will be airing 3-D ads during its first NBA game to be produced in the third dimension.

Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union notes that 24/7 Penguins/Capitals was well-produced.

Sad story. You may not have known Steven Smith, but 578 people on Twitter did. I learned of his passing through several Yankee tweeps. Steven was a diehard Yankees fan, and from what I’ve learned of him, he could not have been nicer person. His dream was to work in sports. Pete Iorizzo of the Times Union writes that Steven’s untimely death earlier this week shook many of his Twitter friends.

Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review says 24/7 was a compare and contrast session between the Penguins and Capitals.

    Some Friday Megalinks, Part II

by , under 30 for 30, CBS Sports, Chris Berman, College Football, ESPN, Golf Channel, LPGA, MASN, MLB, MLB Network, NFL, Sports Talk Radio, TNT, TV Ratings, World Cup

    Time for more megalinks.

    National

First, several media writers are amused by the war of words between CBS and ESPN over the most viewed broadband event ever. ESPN claimed 1.1 million people went online to watch the USA-Algeria World Cup match on Wednesday. CBS jumped in by saying, “Not so fast!” It sent out a press release saying the Duke-Butler game had more online views. And early Friday evening, ESPN sent out its reply sticking with its claim and saying CBS’ measurement of online views is rather limited. Stay tuned.

Mike Shields from Mediaweek has a story on the CBS/ESPN sparring.

The Sports Media Watch tells us that the final round of this year’s U.S. Open was up from last year, but down from 2007 and 2008.

The Nielsen Wire blog says the goal that put the United States in the Round of 16 of the World Cup generated plenty of online buzz and messages.

From earlier this week, John Strege of Golf Digest reviewed the U.S. Open and Chris Berman’s performance, calling him “a human vuvuzela.” (Scroll down)

The Big Lead was not impressed with ESPN’s NBA Draft coverage.

Yahoo’s Big League Stew blog has some baseball documentary suggestions for ESPN’s 30 for 30 series.

    East and Mid-Atlantic

Richard Sandomir of the New York Times writes about the CBS/ESPN battle over online views.

Kevin Oklobzija from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle takes us behind the scenes with Golf Channel as it’s in town for the LPGA Championship.

David Farenthold of the Washington Post says MASN will air a year-long public service campaign on cleaning up Chesapeake Bay.

    South

Barry Jackson from the Miami Herald writes that veteran announcer Dick Stockton will call Dolphins exhibition games on TV this season.

David Barron in the Houston Chronicle says two local colleges get more TV exposure for football season.

    Midwest

Bob Wolfley of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says ESPN’s Outside the Lines will explore drug charges against a Green Bay Packers defensive end.

Phil Rosenthal from the Chicago Tribune has a link to the opening of the new MLB Network reality series on the White Sox.

Ed Sherman of Crain’s Chicago Business has his winners and losers in sports business and media.

Paul Christian in the Rochester (MN) Post-Bulletin talks about the ratings for USA-Algeria.

David Briggs from the Columbia Daily Tribune writes that the University of Missouri is pondering its own sports TV network

Dan Caesar of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the future of a long-time sports radio personality could be in doubt.

The Kansas City Star says ESPN will be in town on Saturday for live shots of fans watching the USA-Ghana World Cup match.

    West

Scott D. Pierce from the Deseret (UT) News likes the British announcers on ESPN’s World Cup coverage.

To John Maffei of the North County Times who says Mark Neely who’s calling the San Diego Padres for a short stretch while Dick Enberg is at Wimbledon sounds like he hasn’t missed a beat.

Jim Carlisle of the Ventura County Star says we’re watching the World Cup especially with the US involved.

Jim talks with TNT’s Kenny “The Jet” Smith.

    Canada

Chris Zelkovich from the Toronto Star says ESPN has changed the way we changed sports.

Chris adds a Toronto sports radio station underwent a lot of changes this week.

Bruce Dowbiggin of the Toronto Globe and Mail also writes about the station’s personnel upheaval.

Dave Fuller from the Toronto Sun talks with the station’s program director about the personnel changes.

And we’ll end it there. Back tomorrow with more linkage and press releases.

Golf Channel Quotage Regarding the LPGA Championship

by , under Golf Channel, LPGA

Here are highlights from the Golf Channel announcing crew regarding the LPGA Championship this weekend.

    LPGA Championship
    Golf Channel Broadcast Team Quotes

PITTSFORD, N.Y., June 23 – The LPGA’s second major of the year, the LPGA Championship, kicks off Thursday from Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford, N.Y. Golf Channel will air live, four-round coverage of the tournament Thursday-Friday from 12:30-2:30 p.m. ET, followed by weekend coverage from 4-7 p.m. ET. Terry Gannon, Judy Rankin, Phil Parkin, Kay Cockerill, Val Skinner, Jane Crafter and Rich Lerner will host the network’s live coverage. We caught up with Rankin and Cockerill to give their thoughts and predictions on the week, and Gannon to discuss making his Golf Channel debut.
    Terry Gannon, Play-by-Play Host
On making his Golf Channel debut this week:
“My passion for golf began as a kid, sitting on the couch with my Dad watching Jack Nicklaus teach us a thing or two about greatness. Over the last nine years I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of the game, in the booth following the great players of the current era. Now, I’m extremely excited to be joining an accomplished group of professionals at the Golf Channel in covering the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour on a regular basis. It’s a new chapter in my professional life and the LPGA Championship is the perfect place to start. Sitting next to Judy Rankin at a major? I’ll take that any week of the year.”

Judy Rankin, Golf Channel Analyst and World Golf Hall of Famer

Thoughts on Ai Miyazato and the field this week:

“You have to mention Ai Miyazato as a favorite since she is having such a fabulous year. I wouldn’t say the long golf course here is favorable for Ai, but she simply is playing so well and her confidence is so high, she has to be a favorite. Suzann Pettersen is another favorite this week. She is second on the money list, and was fourth last week at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. I have to believe her game is in good order. The thick rough here and the long course will suit her kind of play. Any number of people might play well this week, as they have experience and success at this course. Jeong Jang is a girl who has won here. She hasn’t made a particularly big mark anywhere this year. But, at a place like this where you have had success, it sometimes brings out the good things in your game.”
Jiyai Shin returning to action this week
“Today is two weeks from the day of her appendectomy. So, she might be back a little early. You always say in competitive golf, ‘watch out for the walking wounded and sick.’ They tend to be relaxed and have lower expectations. As a result they don’t get too tied in a knot. So, it could play in her favor. I would have to think that it is a little bit early to come back after an appendectomy. But, losing the number one position in the world, and this week being a major championship, has driven her to come back a week sooner than she normally would have.”
Working with Terry Gannon, who is making his Golf Channel debut this week
“When you sit alongside someone, you really get to know how capable they are and how smooth they are. How often they jump in and help you. Terry is just terrific. We have become very good friends over the years and I couldn’t be happier to be working with Terry. He always has had a certain passion for the LPGA. I think that since he is working this one – one of the biggest LPGA events – speaks to that.  He knows the LPGA Tour and he looks forward to this week.”

Thoughts on Ai Miyazato vs. Jiyai Shin for World No. 1
“I think it’s amazing what Ai has done this year, winning four times, including last week for the first time in the U.S. and taking the number-one ranking for the first time.  She has a chance to become the first Japanese woman to win a major since Chako Higuchi won the LPGA Championship in 1977. She will be under enormous pressure to do so, but she has the game and temperament to handle it. I think there will be a long lasting rivalry between Ai and Jiyai Shin. This week could be tough for Shin, as she is not 100 percent. I am doubtful she can handle it physically, being so soon back after surgery.”
Thoughts on course changes in preparation for LPGA Championship
.     “The LPGA brought in the fairways a lot, but the course is not running fast. The back nine is where it all happens and the fairways will get tighter and tighter as the week goes on.”

    That’s it.
